The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, April IS, 1998 Pace 2 •;»: ii* Surprise Ending Disturbs Author by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer Bond Head novelist Gregory Ward was taken by surprise surprise to learn the publishing house that gave him his start would be closed in May. Little Brown & Co., a US firm owned by publishing giant Time Warner, announced on March 17 that it would be closing its operation in Canada despite a profitable performance here. Ward can't figure the corporate reasoning behind the ■ move. But he docs know it's one less door to knock on for up-and-coming writers in this country. "They fostered Canadian talent. They took a chance on me and they promoted me very well." Ward's first book, Carpet King, was published by Little Brown Canada in 1991. Water Damage, his second book, was published in 1993 and is soon to be made into a movie. His most recent thriller, Kondor, about the auto ■ industry, was published in hardcover by Little Brown Canada in 1997. The paperback release of Kondor, originally scheduled scheduled for this fall, will now be handled by a Timc Warncr distributor H. B. Fcnn, a company Ward says isn't in l mainstream publishing. That leaves him wondering how important elements such as cover design and promotion will be handled. ■ "There's more to putting out a paperback than gluing pages together," he says. Ward will have to find a new publisher for the book lie is working on now. The still-untitled thriller will deal with a number of women's issues. Ward said Little Brown writers enjoyed a close knit . relationship with the publisher. "I'm.sorry to sec it come . to an end," he says. "I don't like to see a publisher like Kim McArthur ■ who does things independently, and with pizazz and generosity generosity of spirit stripped of her presidency."
