The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, April 18, 1998 Page 5 Mackie Automotive Upset by Orangevill The Mackie Automotive Systems Major Novice AA Toros' quest for the Central District O.M.H.A. championship championship came to an end on Saturday, March 28, when the Orangeville Flyers won the bcsl-of-fivc scries for the championship, three games to none. All three games were thrilling, one-goal margin affairs. The Flyers hosted the Mackie Toros in game one of the scries. The Toros came out strong as they built a 2-0 lead on goals by Kyle Goodchild, assisted by Mitch McMichacl and Stephen Bathe and McPherson Novices Ends Season From page 4 hosted by Oshawa, the McPherson team won their first game against the Oshawa Crows 6-4 with goals going to Carly Ncmisz, Chantel Krukkcrl, Lesley Sinopoli, Jenna Law and a pair for Michelle Hodgson. Assists going to Alexandra Stade, Law, Krukkert, Ncmisz and a pair for Courtney Hamilton. In the second game, the McPherson team lost to the Oshawa T.P.A. team 2- 1 with the only McPherson goal going to Carly Ncmisz after receiving receiving a perfect pass from Collen Bathe. In our third and final game, the McPherson team lost to Mississauga 1-0, eliminating the McPherson team from going to the finals. The game ended in a scoreless tie. Sand and Gravel's Matt Bourgeois and Aamco's Erik Smale were both outstanding in a goaltendcr's duel, each earning a shutout. With five out of a possible six points, Aamco advanced to the "C" final. Aamco's opponent in the "C" championship scries was Kool Enterprises. In game one, Kool edged out Aamco 2- 1 in a hard fought game. Scoring for Aamco was Ryan Ormiston, assisted by Ryan Hill and Jamie Grant. In game two, Aamco tied Kool 2-2 in a very physical contest. Scoring for Aamco was Ryan Hill (lg) Andrew Warren (lg), Phil Hopkins, Jamie Grant and Justin Osborne (la) each. In the final game, Aamco needed to win by two goals in order to win the championship. The Aamco team was on top of their game anchored by great goaltcnding from Erik Smale and a terrific effort by the defencemen - Chad Gilmour, Justin Osborne, Jeff Ball, Rob Vale and Anthony Weaver. Keeping Kool's offence at bay, the Aamco team came out on top with a 4-1 win. Scoring for Aamco was Ryan Hill notching a hat- trick, Trevor Lycctt (lg, la), Justin Osborne, Jamie Grant, Jesse Cole, Anthony Weaver and Ryan Ormiston with (la) each. Esso Award Winners were Andrew Warren - Most Dedicated, Rob Vale - Most Improved and Chad Gilmour - Most Sportsmanlike, As coach of Aamco Bantams, I would like to congratulate the whole team in turning their season season around, I would also like to thank my assistant coach, Al Warren and trainer Dennis Smale for the great job they did on the' ice and behind the bench. Hailey Van Seggclcn, who was assisted assisted by Brandon Doblc and Corey Prince, scored the Toros marker. After David Ross, assisted by Bathe and Jason Sulyma, put the Toros ahead 4-2 carly in the third period, the Flyers struck back with three straight goals to take the lead for the first time at 5- 4. Ross, with his second goal of the game tied the score. But Orangeville scored the winner a minute later to make the final score 6-5. The Mackie Toros hosted hosted the Flyers for game two of the scries at Darlington Arena. In a tight checking match, the Flyers defeated the Clarington squad 1-0. A second period Orangeville breakaway goal was the only shot that beat Chad Dcighton, who played a strong game in the Toros net. The Mackie Toros returned to Orangeville for game three of the series. The fast-skating flyers scored 29 seconds into the game to open a quick 1-0 lead. Andrew Albertini scored his first of two powerplay goals on the evening less than a minute later to tie the score 1-1. David Ross and Hailey Van Seggclcn earned assists. By the latter stages of the third period, Orangeville had a 3-1 lead. But powerplay goals by Stephen Bathe and Albertini, assisted by Bathe, tied the game a 3-3. However, the Flyers broke the hearts of the Toros and their supporters in the crowd when they scored the scries winner with 22.3 seconds remaining in the game. The Central District O.M.H.A. silver medalist Mackie Automotive System Toros finished the 1997-98 season with a 53- 16-2 (wins, losses, tics) record, which included regular season, playoff and tournament games. The team's goals against average average was a tidy 1.75.
