Richards Staff Writer What do you think of when the word biker is used? Many people in Durham automatically think of gangs. However, not all bikers arc like that, says John Rackstraw of Bowmanvillc. "The motorcyclists who are outlaws are in the minority," minority," he states. "We're just people who enjoy motorcycling." motorcycling." The soft spok'en Rackstraw rides a Ho.nda Goldwing and dresses "in leathers for protection." He has been riding for 33 years, since age 16. His love of riding riding motorbikes was fanned by his father. Recently, Rackstraw described his role as this area's coordinator for the Ride for Sight fund-raiser on behalf of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation. "The ride is the only private private fund-raising done lor the Foundation," he explained. What began as a bunch of friends doing a fund-raiser fund-raiser for a rider's daughter has turned into an international event. This year's ride for sight is to take place from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21, from the Toronto International Centre to Collingwood. The Central Ontario Chapter of the foundation is hoping to raise $500,000 this year with the ride, and Rackstraw predicts there could be between 4,000 to 5,000 participants. This is the 19th year for the Ride for Sight and the Central Ontario Chapter has raised $1.95 million for the cause over the past five years. He says currently there are over 100,000 people in Canada who suffer from this incurable disease which is the major cause of blindness in people from age six to 60. "One in 80 people carry the gene, and there are three million people worldwide who have RP," lie said. Rackstraw would like to connect with other motorcyclists motorcyclists in the Clarington area who would like to join this year's Ride for Sight. "Cathy and I do the ride each year and it would be nice to get a group together and go in it," lie said. When asked why people seem to enjoy motorcycling so much, Rackstraw explained "it gives you a sense of freedom. You're not wrapped in metal and you can feel the wind move around you. For those wanting to get involved with the Ride for Sight weekend event, Rackstraw invites you to give him a call at 697-3596 in the evenings. He'll set you up with pledge sheets, or take a pledge for his ride over the phone.
