Centennial Celebrations Planned For May at Orono Town Hall The historic Township Hall in Orono, better known as the Orono Town Hall, has been a sentinel at the northeast northeast corner of Main Street and Park Street since its completion in the fall of 1898. This year, 1998, the community celebrates the Hall's 100th birthday with many events being planned. Its birth in 1898 and ultimate ultimate official opening on March 1, 1899 was not without some controversy, for it had been a topic of debate for a number of years. / The forerunner, a brick Township Hall, constructed in 1857 on the south side of Centre Street, Orono, at a cost of $1,200.00 was proving proving to be more of a liability than an asset. Service to the community was becoming minimal. The Centre Street Hall was destroyed by fire on June 12th, 1898. Within but a few days plans were well underway lor the present-day Orono Town Hall with a total completion completion bill of $6,200.00. The new hall, Main and Park Streets, was completed in the fall of 1898 with the Official Opening being held on March 1, 1899. The opening ceremonies were conducted by Judge Thomas Benson of Port Hope and professional entertainment was provided by the talented talented Jimmy Fax, a comic character singer. G.M. Miller, Port Hope, was the architect, Robert Cowan, Kendal, carpenter, Robert Gordon, Orono, mason and A.J. Walter, Orono, painter and glazier. Of course the hall came complete with its corner stone and contains papers prepared by Percy Long. Clary Vinson, C.T. Miller and John E. Armstrong, all of Orono of the day. These papers were placed in the traditional glass jar and scaled away in the corner stone. Councillors prior to, during during and on completion of the hall were: F.B. Lovckin, James Brown, G.W. Jones, Wm. Thompson and J. F. McMillan. Listed councillors councillors for 1898 were F.B. Lovckin, Win. Armstrong, M. J. Halinan, J. G. Honey and J. F. McMillan. 1899 councillors were F, B. Lovckin, James, Brown, John Davey, Hiram Millson and J. F. McMillan. A detention centre was included in the new hall but never used until 1919. The first prisoner was a Russian named Danzubaek. The detention centre was used mainly for transients who sought shelter in Orono during during the depression days of the thirties. R. IT. Wood, caretaker, reported the use of the centre oil 25 occasions occasions in 1937. The Town Hall clock was donated to the municipality municipality in 1935 through the estate of Mrs, Nicholas Harris, the former Mary Ann Convey. The clock came at a cost of $1500,00. A 75 pound bell chimes out the hours. Down through the years the hall has been a centre of many activities both local and county wide.
