The one on the right earned top honors at a Bay of Quinte competition, while the one at the left picked up two firsts at a world championship in Maryland. Gone Fishin Carvings Take First Prize in World Championships A Bowmanvillc man's fish carving skill has landed him a world championship. championship. Joe Penney won two first place ribbons ribbons in the Ward World Fish Carving Competition which took place last month in Ocean City Maryland. His true-to-Iifc sculpture of a black crappie lunging at a pair of minnows was judged best in its category and best in its division within the novice decorative decorative fish competition. Earlier, his carving of a walleye devouring a small perch earned first and second prizes in different categories at a Bay of Quinte carving competition. Joe's images of sport fish speak for themselves. But, they arc even more remarkable when you consider the fact that he only picked up the knives and chisels two years ago. "I was out of work and I wanted a hobby," he recalls. However, Joe was experienced in conventional woodworking and he is a pipefitter by trade. So, he's no stranger to working with his hands. He took courses from Jan Oegcma in Bowmanvillc and became a member of the Bowmanvillc Wood Chips carving club. . "It's really enjoyable," he says of his hobby. He adds: "I like the pleasure of the finished product and seeing what can come out of the wood." "I like doing fish because I love fishing." fishing." To get a scale-by-scale replica of a fish, he uses patterns from books, but also studies the fish he catches. For instance, he traced the outline of a wall eye on paper and also took photographs from many angles in order to create the lifelike image which won awards last month. But, his carving is by no means limited limited to fish. He also creates animals, birds and caricatures of people. When they inspect a carving, judges look for a number of factors, including originality, color and details. Some will use magnifying glasses for closer inspection. Others will count the scales. But, perhaps the biggest compliment Joe received was when passers-by thought his fish carving was actually a stuffed and mounted specimen. "I'd say pick up a book and take a class," Joe suggests when asked what kind of advice lie would give would-be wood carvers. Taking a course is especially especially important because it gives you information about supplies and tools as well as an opportunity to meet other wood carvers. "I'm going to continue taking classes," classes," he adds and suggests he may also venture into teaching the skill some day. And, with the kind of results he's achieved in the last two years, there's no doubt you'll find him at the head of any class he happens to enter. If his fish were any more realistic, they'd still be in the lake. His carvings are remarkable when you consider he only picked up the knives and chisels two years ago Horticultural Club Hosts Spring Show Orono News by I.
