Clarke's version of World Vision's 30-Hour Famine occurred between 12 noon on April 3 to 6 p.m. on April 4 and was organized by Julie Plath, Alecia Staples and Bob Roney. In order to be involved, students and staff had to agree not to cat during the above time period, although juice, water, gingeralc and gatoradc were allowed. Approximately 55 students and Mr. Facey-Crowlhcr, Ms. Pcthcrick and Mr. O'Neill participated in this event in order to focus on the difficulties difficulties experienced by children in third world countries where many suffer much longer than 30 hours before they receive anything to cat. Mr. Sharpe and the Senior Concert Band travelled to CDCI East on Friday to participate participate in thé Northumbcrland-Clarington Senior Concert Band Festival. All high schools in the board were invited to participate participate in this adjudicated event, and 29 of Clarke's students students from grade nine to OAC performed in this concert. concert. This was a different group of students from those who played in the Jazz Festival which was held at Clarke earlier in the year. The formalities of the concert concert involved greetings from Rick Essex, the Principal; at CDCI East, formerly a math teacher here at Clarke, from Judi Armstrong from the N-C Board of Education and the introduction of Peter Stoll. Mr. Stoll, the adjudicator of the event, trained at the University of Toronto, Mr. Sharpe's alma mater, and is a clarinet specialist. Clarke's band played two selections, the Dorchester Concert March by Eric Oslcrling and Accolada by Ed Hockcby. Julie Harper had a flute solo which she performed performed beautifully. The adjudicator complimented complimented the band on its excellent excellent tone quality, and he felt that the choice of music was very appropriate. They played well rhythmically as an ensemble group, a tribute to both the students and to the conductor! Everyone felt good about their participation in this event. Clarke students performed performed admirably, even in the company of much larger schools where bands are chosen chosen through the tryout process. Students playing in the Senior Concert Band at Clarke come from all grades; pulling this group together and having them perform in concert is no small feat; the students and Mr. Sharpe are to he complimented on their achievements to dale! The Senior Concert Band, along with a number of other groups, will perform in the Spring Concert which will be produced by- the Arts Department on May 14 at 7 p.m. This concert will show- ease the talents of students from Clarke and The Fines. Further details will he made available ns plans progress. Athlete of the Week Jennifer Patrick, a grade nine student here at Clarke, has been given the honour of being the first midget girl chosen as athlete of the week by her coaches. Since arriving arriving at Clarke, Jen has played volleyball and basketball at the midget level; she also plays for the Ganaraska Wolves outside of school time. Her coach from the Wolves is Steve Brinkman. In the summer, baseball is Jennifer's game. At this point, her goal is to have fun. Her Vincent Massey Choir to Open Joys Gome on April 16 The Vincent Massey School choir has been rehearsing since last fall for their their upcoming appearance at the Toronto SkyDome. The local choir was chosen to open the April 16th night game between the Jays and the Oakland A's.
