Cooler mornings and late afternoons are preferred by many pickers, as most field crops grow in wide, unshaded unshaded places. Helpful things to pack. Bring along and old mat, towel or section of newspaper newspaper to sit or kneel on in the field. Don't forget insect repellent. Bringing water or juice is a good idea. Browse through your favourite cookbooks for ideas before setting out. Think what you would like to do and how much you'll need with your personal harvest. Pick realistically. If you arc interested in Pick Your Own produce primarily primarily as a fresh commodity, better to make several trips over a season than pick too much on a single outing and not be able to use it all. Pick a destination that you have never visited and pack a picnic to enjoy on the spot or on your way. Never Shake a Baby, Experts Warn Frustration from a crying baby can lead to forceful shaking and Shaken Baby Syndrome Anyone who has ever had to deal with a baby who cries excessively excessively knows all to well how frustrating frustrating it can be. When parents and other caregivers of babies are exhausted, irritable or depressed, they have a harder time meeting the demanding needs of a crying infant. Unfortunately, a crying baby can be overwhelming at times, and parents and caregivers sometimes sometimes succumb to the frustration with forceful shaking, which can lead to serious injuries and even death. Experts have now identified identified "Shaken Baby Syndrome" as a fonn of child abuse that occurs when a baby is shaken and damage is done to the brain. In some cases, shaking a baby can result in death. Experts believe that Shaken Baby Syndrome may be on the rise in Canada, and much is being done to educate parents and caregivers about how to control the frustrations they experience when looking after infants, especially ones who cry a great deal. Crying is one of the most common triggers of Shaken Baby Syndrome, so it is important to equip parents with advice and support. The IOF Foresters Prevention of Child Abuse Fund, a national charity with a long history of child abuse prevention and positive parenting education, encourages everyone who has a young baby, or knows someone who does, to do their part to offer support. Here are some tips for coping with a crying baby. Tips for Dealing With a Crying Baby: If your baby cries a lot, there may be a problem beyond m soiled diaper or hunger, You may wisli to take your baby to the doctor to sec if a medical reason can be found. However, sometimes babies cry for no apparent reason. Try these tips if you're having trouble consoling consoling your baby. • Feed the baby slowly; burp the baby often. • Oiler the baby n pacifier. • Hold the baby against your chest and walk or rock him. • If you breastfeed, avoid foods that are likely to cause digestive problems for the baby or that have caffeine in them (onions, beans, coffee, tea or cola, for example). If you have had all you can take, wrap the baby in a soft blanket and put the baby on his side (in a quiet, 'dark room if possible). Take a break, and have someone else take care of the baby for a while if possible. • No matter how impatient or angry you feel, DO NOT SHAKE THE BABY. Letting the baby cry it out when you are at your rope's end is safer than shaking the baby out of frustration. • If you do not have any family or friends nearby to support you, call your local family and children's services agency for advice. • Join a 'new parents'support group and benefit from sharing your experiences with other parents in similar situations. • Secure some literature on how to cope with the stress of parenting. Call the IOF Foresters Prevention of Child Abuse Fund at 1-800-922- 4463 for pamphlets on "Moms and Stress" and "Never Shake a Baby". Tips for Friends, Relatives or Neighbours of a Family With An Infant: Each one of us has a social responsibility to protect children. If you know new parents or a babysitter of an infant, try these helpful strategies: • Call and offer to take the baby so the parent can have a break. • Encourage the parent to call for moral support if the baby is having a particularly bad day. • Offer to take the other children children in the family for an hour or so to give the parent some relief. • Encourage the parent to join a "new parents" group in the community, Call the local community centre or family services agency to find out what's available. • Bring a meal over, • Offer to run errands or do the grocery shopping. • If you suspect that the parent is at their wit's end, step in and provide relief. For more information on positive positive patenting and the prevention prevention of child abuse, call the IOF Foresters Prevention of Child Abuse Fund at 1-800-922-4463.
