Pii ne 5 OFAH Warns that Lake Ontario has ! Been Invaded by the Round Goby Yet another alien invader invader has infiltrated Lake Ontario, and this one promises to wreak liavoe on the aquatic ecosystem. For several years the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) has warned that round gobies, native to the Caspian and Black Sea areas of Europe, have been hitching a ride across the Atlantic via the ballast tanks of ocean going ships. Qobies were first found in the St. Clair River in 1990 and have since invaded the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and some areas of Lakes Huron, Michigan and Erie. This relatively small fish is finding the Great Lakes much to its liking, and making itself right at home. On July 15, an angler fishing in Lake Ontario at Port Dalhousic reeled in one of the pesky fish. He recognized his catch from an OFAH/MNR Round 'KRACO" CARPENTRY & CONTRACTING Est. 1976 Complete Carpentry Services • Designing • Custom Built Homes • Renovations • Additions • Decks, etc. William Kraayvanger P.0. "The sighting is significant significant since it is the first confirmation that round gobies have become established established in Lake Ontario," says OFAH spokesperson, Francine MacDonald. Incredibly prolific, the goby spawns several times a season. As this aggressive aggressive fish has flourished, native fish like mottled sculpin and log perch have been forced to compete for food and habitat, and in some areas their populations populations have declined. Anglers arc cursing this little invader because of its extremely aggressive behaviour. The goby will strip bait off a hook before sportfish even have a chance to investigate. Gobies arc a unique fish characterized by their mottled brown colour and fused pelvic (bottom) fins that form a suction disk, gobies feed mainly on zebra mussels. However, they arc not having an impact on mussel populations, populations, and scientists arc concerned that the gobies' feeding habits will lead to increased contamination levels in the food chain. Two species of goby have been found in the Great Lakes. The round goby which rarely exceeds a length of about 25 centimetres, centimetres, and the tube nose goby which reaches a maximum length of about 11 centimetres. But, what these fish lack in size, they more than make up for in sheer numbers. Gobies join the zebra mussel, spiny water flea, and ruffe on the least wanted list of invading species. In a typical night, they go back and forth between two sleep phases. In the rapid-eyc-movemenl phase (REM). I he brain is highly active, the eyes move rapidly back and forth, and dreams occur frequently. In the non-REM phase (NREM). there is less brain activity and no eye movement. movement. The deepest sleep, which occurs during the NREM period, is called slow-wave sleep. This delicate cycle is unfortunately subject to disturbances. About one in ten people suffer from insomnia--defined as having trouble falling asleep, staving asleep, or waking up too early. Sleep disturbances are Mrongly related lo mental illness. In a large American study. 40% of insomniacs also reported a psychiatric disorder, mainly anxiety and depression. Because exercise has been linked again and again with emotional benefits, it is possible that mental health gains associated with exercise may also improve sleep. A few studies suggest that physical activity may be useful in preventing and treating sleep problems: • In a 1985 survey of 1600 Finns, 33% of men and 30% of women rated exercise as the most important sleep-promoting factor. As many as 43% of those who increased their exercise over the previous three months reported improved sleep, whereas 30% of those who decreased their exercise over the same period reported worsened worsened sleep. Sedentary respondents respondents also reported a higher rate of excessive daytime tiredness- a symptom of inadequate sleep at night. • In 1985, Trindcr et al. reported that the type of physical training can influence both sleep onset and the amount of slow-wave sleep. Aerobic training was associated associated with an increase in slow- wave sleep, unlike power training or a combination of aerobic and power training, which led to decreases in slow- wave sleep. • In a 1995 study, healthy but sedentary elders with normal sleep patterns participated in six months of either aerobic exercise exercise or stretching and flexibility training. Both groups reported sleeping better at the end of the program. Only the aerobic exercise exercise group showed a clear increase in slow-wave sleep, however. • Physical activity may also play a role in consolidating sleep into a single period. Sleep and wakefulness wakefulness patterns are clearly disrupted when individuals spend their days in complete idleness. Without activity, the prolonged sleep period of about eight hours ends up being replaced by short fragmented sleep bouts. What type of exercise do we need to sleep better? Although there is no definite answer to this question at the present time, it appears that high-intensity exercise has the greatest effect on slow-wave sleep. However, sleep researchers are unsure about how changes in slow- wave sleep relate to changes in sleep quality. Until they come up with a precise answer, the best approach is to participate in aerobic activity, regularly. Our members, Ted and Molly Moulton, represented represented our Club recently at Kingston, playing in a mixed fours tournament. Ted was on one team while Molly was on the opposing team. Ted's team won two games but not high enough score to be on the prize list. But Molly's team won the two-game high prize. Nice going! Neck and Shoulder Pain?: Consider the Source QUESTION: Telma, I have had neck and shoulder pain for years. I work at a desk. My neck feels stiff and sore. Around baseball season when I start to do a little more, I feel a lot of achi- ness in my neck and shoulders. I have had treatment in the past, but it always seems to come back. How can physiotherapy physiotherapy help? NECK and SHOULDER pain sufferers often seek out the help of a physiotherapist for treatment. So many are, like our inquirer, career people people who toil many, many hours during the week hunched over a desk or a computer keyboard. On the weekend they reactivate their bodies: in this instance the baseball diamond provides the activity of choice, but others others might choose their gardens. gardens. In any instance of neck and shoulder pain we consider consider the source for the treatment treatment and prevention; one of the underlying bone and joint - biomechanical - causes, for neck and shoulder problems problems is weak SHOULDER BLADES. The shoulder blade muscles muscles are called STABILIZERS and rightfully so because these are muscles that hold a position so that other muscles can move. Thus, if the stabilizer stabilizer or shoulder blade is unable to hold a good position, there is incorrect movement of the neck and shoulder joints and recurring pain in these areas is the result. In my clinic we see a lot ol weak stabilizers in clients who enjoy sports. Gymnasts and swimmers are particularly prone because they tend to be over flexible, a condition that often leads to shoulder tendonitis and rotator cull problems. There is a visual and hands-on test that vie conduct to determine if a client's shoulder blades are weak. He/she is asked to lift their arms up to shoulder level from the sides of the body. We then compare one arm to the other. It is normal that there is some movement in the shoulder blade when the arm is lifting, but the shoulder blade should not "wing out". In cases where the shoulder blade is weak it wings out -- an action that is visible and we actually feel the difference in the blade's movement. This test is called the SCAPULA STABILIZATION TEST. If we find a weakness . then the task of correcting it is our next step. Exercises to strengthen the shoulder blades or stabilizers stabilizers are an effective corrector, corrector, and must be custom tailored tailored to the individual patient's weakness by a physiotherapist. physiotherapist. And since the shoulder blades work the abdominal muscles, the abdominal muscles also need to be stabilized. Neck and shoulder problems? problems? See your physiotherapist physiotherapist to determine the source. The solution? A proper diagnosis diagnosis and appropriate treatment. treatment. Once corrected the problem problem may, as our inquirer suggested, suggested, come back but recurring recurring weakness is a source ol recurring pain or problems. Therefore, a course of physiotherapy physiotherapy to handle the symptoms symptoms and correct the underlying underlying causes is helpful. This is the solution to the immediate problem and prevention for future neck and shoulder complaints.
