Now, all they need to do is furnish it. Supporters of the Claringlon Older Adults Centre, which will open September 19th at the former former Lions Hall on Beech Street in Bowmanville, held a barbecue outside of Bowmanville's Loblaws store last Saturday. It was the first of three barbecues planned for the location. Board of directors member June Clark says the new centre comes not a moment too soon. "We've been running since 1989 using various churches, but we badly needed a focal point," she said while serving up hot dogs last Saturday. 50+ Movin' and Groovin' classes will join line dancing, tai chi, yoga and chairobics groups in the new building. As well, there will be a lounge for seniors to play cards or visit with others. "We also hope to have some educational programs, programs, like computer classes. "Today, the future of health care in our region looks better than I can ever remember it. Now we can move forward and bring badly needed services to the region," she said. said Clark. The Municipality of Clarington conducted a feasibility study in the early 1990s to determine the need for an older adults centre. Since then, several locations have been proposed proposed for the centre, and the Town finally purchased the Lions Centre this year. Now, supporters arc busy coming up with ways to raise the $300,000 necessary necessary to furnish and buy equipment for the centre. So far, they've managed to raise about $72,000. Barbecues will be held in support of the centre Aug. 22 and Sept. 5 in front of Loblaws. Loblaws is contributing contributing the food and equipment, and the Older Adults Centre will receive 50 percent of what they make. As well, the group is selling t-shirts, and plans arc in the works to sell oranges and grapefruits in the new year. The major fundraising event will take place at the centre's Sept. 19 grand opening. The centre will be open that day from 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. with free programs and demonstrations. Food and refreshments will be sold to raise funds. Clark said she thinks the centre will be a great help to everyone, not just seniors. "I've always said, if you keep people well and active and let them socialize, socialize, they're not going to use the health care system," system," she said. Anyone wishing to make a contribution can call the Clarington Older Adult Centre's treasurer, Rita Wilson, at 623-3063.
