The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 5, 1998 Page 5 Bowmanville High School Grad Up to the Challenge Raising Funds To Work in Costa Rica by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer In order to help others, Deb Street needs some help. She also needs a really really big, sturdy knapsack. Street, 18, says she was faced with some tough decisions when she finished finished her OAC's at Bowmanville High School this spring, She knew she was going to take a year off before pursuing postsecondary postsecondary education, but she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. That's when she found Youth Challenge International. "I wanted to do something something where I'd learn about myself, and I wanted to look into something to do with developing countries," countries," she says. Youth Challenge International is a non-profit non-profit organization. It sends young people from across Canada into developing countries to work on community community development, health work and environmental environmental research. The program breaks down into four "Challenges." The first challenge involves the selection process. After being shortlisted from a comprehensive written application, applicants go through a selection day, during which they are subjected subjected to testing to determine determine resourcefulness, compatibility and commitment. commitment. After a gruelling 12 hour day, Street found she had been selected. Street is currently on her second "Challenge." This stage involves prepar ing to go to the developing country. Workers arc sent to cither Guyana or Costa Rica for 10 weeks; Street has chosen the latter. She plans to leave on or about December 8lh. Preparing for her trip involves more than simply backing a bag. She's been teamed with a group of young people from Whitby, and between them, they have decided who will be responsible for each aspect of their preparation. Before they go, they'll have to acquire Spanish, learn essential skills like first aid, and learn about the country they will be visiting. As well, they'll have to acquire the necessary equipment, including a sturdy knapsack in which to carry supplies. Also, each individual is required to go through medical testing testing to ensure they will be able to endure difficult conditions. They also each have to receive inoculations inoculations against typhoid and Hepatitis A. But there's another more difficult condition to the second "Challenge." Each participant is required to raise $3,950 in order to cover the costs involved in working in Costa Rica. Street's fundraising started last weekend with a yard sale, and she has several other money-making plans, including car washes and a community corn roast. She says she'll work hard to raise the money. "You don't go if you don't raise the four grand," she says. Street says she's looking looking forward to her time in Costa Rica. The actual trip and working in the country comprise the third "Challenge." While in Costa Rica, Youth Challenge International g>t. "I'm a little seared, but I'm excited, ready to go. I think I'll learn a lot," predicts predicts Street. Street's family is "a little little bit concerned because I'm missing Christmas and New Year's, but they've also been so supportive." Her mother, a longtime volunteer for various organizations, organizations, inspired her to give of herself, says Street, who won't be able to talk to her family the entire time she's gone. "There's just not the availability for phones. There might be a chance to call (from the airport when she arrives in Costa Rica), but after the first day, I can only communicate by mail," says Street, who will take a supply of airmail airmail envelopes and other stationary with her. The list of items to bring along on the Challenge is short. Participants are only to bring "the bare minimum because it has to go in the backpack." Street will take enough clothes to get by, as well as survival gear, such as a water purification purification system, ample insect rcpcllant and a bug net to sleep under in the small living quarters she will share with other participants participants while working in Costa Rica. "That's one thing that scares me, the whole bug thing. But I'm getting over it," she laughs. When she returns from Costa Rica, Street will enter the fourth "Challenge." In this step, she is required to complete 100 hours of community service, and speak to organizations organizations and sponsors about her experience. She hopes her experience in the Costa Rican community community will "help develop my community." She thinks hearing of her experience will help people appreciate what they have here at home. The community service service aspect of Youth Challenge International must be completed within five months of returning to Canada. After completing the fourth challenge, Street hopes to pursue a career in photography. She plans to bring her camera along to "document everything." "I think this will give me an eye for the world," she says. Street is actively pursuing pursuing sponsors for her fundraising endeavors. Anyone who wishes to help can call her at 623- 4599.
