Rotary Junior Baseball Team Is Reunited After 54 Years by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer Ninclccn-forly-four was a good year for the Rotary Junior Baseball team. And August 11th, 1998, was a great day to remember it. In 1944, the team made it to the finals of the Ontario Baseball Association champi onships, losing out to Dresden. And, last week, they reunited for the first time in 54 years. Arthur Clémence, a former former member of the team who now lives in San Diego, Calif., came home for a visit with family in Orono. During his stay, the team got together to share snacks and punch while recalling stories at the home of Clemence's sister, May Goode. Clémence says his sister provided names of the players. And his son, who lives on the other side of Toronto, made a lot of phone calls to organize the reunion. Don Gilhooly, of Bowmanvillc, was also a member of the team. He was thrilled with the number number of his teammates who were able to attend the get- together. Though many members of the team still live in the area, they'd never before had a reunion. "I thought it was really good to have that number. It was a very unique afternoon," afternoon," lie said. "We just sat around and went through a lot of good times." Gilhooly says he's not sure this type of event will happen again for the 1944 Rotary Junior Baseball Team. "But we joked that maybe we'd have the next one in San Diego," lie says. Swimmers Parting Ways One's Off to University, One Returns to High School by Jennifer Stone Staff Writer The Clarington Swim Club's dynamic dynamic duo will be separating in September. Jenny Ellis, 19, is heading off to the University of Cincinnati on a full swimming scholarship. And, for 16- year-old breast stroke specialist, Christine Frisina, it's back to Bowmanville High School where she'll start Grade 11 in the fall. According to Ellis, they'll both notice the difference. "I see her more than I sec my own family," says Ellis, who swims the sprint freestyle. The pair have participated in some serious competitions over the past year. Both went to Junior Nationals in Calgary in February. Ellis just returned from the Commonwealth Games Trials in Etobicoke. Though she did not qualify qualify for the games, she was happy to compete. "My goal was to make the meet, not to do well at the meet. Most of the fastest swimmers in Canada were there," Ellis says. The field included several Olympians. Both young women accomplished a number of personal bests this year, which Ellis says is very important to both of them.
