The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, September 9, 1998 Paste 5 New Seniors' Centre is Nearing Completion It may still be a construction construction zone today. But, by Saturday, September I9tb, it will look like a dream come true for supporters of the Clarington Beech Centre. The renovations to the Former Lions Centre in Bowmanvillc will be substantially substantially completed by that day and Clarington residents will celebrate the fact that seniors' programs across the municipality will have a place to call their own. Don Welsh, President of the Clarington Older Adult Association, offered a preview of the centre during a tour of the centre last week. And, although construction is still underway, underway, a beautiful building is taking shape. New additions to the Lions Centre will include a large auditorium, kitchen and washrooms on the west side of the building, plus a lounge, reception and entrance on the north. The Lions Centre itself has been totally transformed into offices for Community Care which will be located in part of the old first floor auditorium, auditorium, along with craft rooms and meeting rooms plus the offices of the Clarington Older Adult Association which will run the building. The building's role as a headquarters for seniors' programs can be seen in details such as the casy-to- operate, single-handled faucets; added handrails in the washrooms; and a front door which automatically opens. Space has been set aside for a future elevator to link the three floors, although all of the main facilities arc on the casily- acccssible first floor. One of the few remaining remaining features of the old building is the wooden spi- ral staircase that linked the first and second floors. The nursery school will continue to occupy the upstairs of the Lions Centre and the Bowmanvillc Lions will be coming back to the centre for their regular meetings. President Don Welsh notes that it's important for the building to have the support of the community. "We have to raise $100,000 to run this place," he says in describing describing the annual budget. In addition, the Association is raising $300,000 to provide furnishings. furnishings. The extent of the programs programs will depend on interest. However, plans arc in place to include lunch at the Centre every Tuesday and Thursday, with meals provided by Memorial Hospital. Lunches may be extended throughout the week and there may be evening programs programs if demand is there. "I think when they see it, they'll be impressed," said Don Welsh in describ ing how Clarington's older adults will respond to the long-awaited centre.
