Free Deliveries (905) 623-7611 by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Wriler Friends of the late Carson Elliott have banded banded together with hopes of establishing some sort of lasting tribute to a man they say "did the work of angels." Viv Woolford, a Bowmanville resident, was the first of five speakers speakers on Monday evening to urge Municipal Council to get involved in plans to commemorate Carson Elliott who died September 2. "He was a champion of the underdog," said Mr. Woolford. "He had friends in the highest and lowest of places. He was no angel, but he did the work of and angel." "You never knew what Carson would do next -- you just knew you wanted to be there when he did it." Among the ideas put forward is a suggestion that Longworth Park near Liberty Street be re-named after Carson Elliott or else name a new park after him. Another suggestion is to have a bust of Carson Elliott made for the town square. Failing that, Woolford would like to see "a huge Christmas dinner" to be held in his honour, with the meal donated and shared by folks off all religious religious denominations, all political parties, and all organizations that Carson helped in the past. Carson Elliott moved to Clarington in 1961 and was owner of the Northcutt-Elliott Funeral Home for many years before his retirement in 1988. He was very active in service club and volunteer volunteer work, was instrumental instrumental in launching the Bowmanville Santa Claus Parade and served the Municipal of Clarington as a regional councillor during during portions of terms in '94 and '97. Mayor Diane Hamre, who served on council with Carson, acknowledged acknowledged the community had lost a well-respected and well-loved citizen. "We are all aware of the loss of Carson to our community," community," she said. Hamre noted that council council has been approached in the past by people wishing to remember respected citizens. citizens. "This matter has come up before. It's not the first time, and it will not be the last." Being a fairly new Clarington resident, lie said he decided to enter the contest to be a part of the community. Jennifer Cooke was clearly thrilled with all work submitted and says all 85 entries will provide a welcome addition to the town's photo library. The majority of photos currently available for use in town publications are so outdated the children in them arc likely grown-ups by now, site jokes, Tlic variety of entries received shows Clarington is truly a community that mixes the best of rural and urban lifestyles, she said, highlighting the fact that "we really do offer small town living, with big city choices." Residents who miss the display at town hall during September will sec the contest winning photos in municipal marketing material from publications to computer websites to community guides. The Canadian Statesman will publish a supplement fenluring the photos in a January issue. She suggested council needed to put a policy in place so it could deal with this type of request now and in the future. George Khouri, a local business owner, also voiced his wish that Carson be recognized. "He was the only person person would could get me to pay $100 for a rubber duck in the Duck Derby. He had a way of getting people to contribute to the causes he deemed worthy." Council voted to refer the ■ matter to staff for a recommendation.
