Durham Orchards Overflowing With Farm Fresh Ripe Apples Fall is here and Durham apples are in prime form. The apple producers of Durham Farm Fresh arc pleased to invite you out to enjoy the crisp fall weather and to take part in the various activities that are beginning shortly. What better way to enjoy the fall than to attend an apple festival and go home with overflowing bags of ripe apples that you and your family family picked? There are numerous numerous events taking place in Durham this fall. Apple season peaks in the fall but with proper storage they will last until the follow ing spring. Before you go picking Durham Farm Fresh apples you should be sure of exactly what type of apple you are looking for: Cortland: red-orange striped skin, Empire: dark red and striped, Golden Delicious: yellow exterior, elongated and five bumps on the bottom, Idared: bright red with greenish-yellow patches, McIntosh: deep red colour with a green splash on the side, Crispin: greenish-yellow exterior with an orange blush, Northern Spy: red-striped skin with yellow colour, Red Delicious: deep red, with elongated shape and five bumps on the bottom, Spartan: dark red skin. When choosing your apples, look for firm, solid apples that are free of wrinkles wrinkles and bruises. It is extremely important that you inspect your apples when you get home to ensure there are no bmised or overripe apples because they will cause the good apples to ripen very quickly and spoil. Use those soft and overripe apples for applesauce or pies. To prevent cut apples from turning brown, dip them in a solution of citrus juice and water.
