l The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville. September 23. ! 99S Paste 7 A Message of Inspiration Anyone who has ever played team sports at a high level is accustomed to the coach entering the dressing room before the big game to deliver an inspirational message in an effort to raise the team's level of play. It has been a couple of years since I've played any team sports, so some of those speeches that coaches gave have long since faded in my memory. But there I stood on Sunday morning with over 100 other participants in a thick fog, listening to one of the strongest pre-game speeches I have ever heard. Andy Turchyniak, of Courticc, was reading from a prepared statement just prior to the start of the Terry Fox Run for cancer research. He is a cancer survivor. His fight against a form of testicular cancer lasted for 11 years, but lie managed to beat the odds. Originally, he was given only a 30% chance of survival. His story is an inspiring one. And so was his message. We are fortunate that he allowed us to reprint it. Welcome, and tliank-yoit for being here this morning. Before I became ill, I was a runner -- a marathon runner logging hundreds of miles a month in training and doing speed intervals on a 1/4 mile track so that I could run a fast marathon time to qualify for the Boston Marathon. 7 was totally obsessed with running. I watched what I ate, hardly ever drank, and basically did all the right things to keep myself healthy and fast. When I ran, I felt invincible. When in a race, I would push myself to faster times and improved finishes. I remember how much fun it was to bask in the glory of the moment after a good race. Sometimes when I raced, / thought about a poem I had taped on my refrigerator. It was an excerpt from the Rudyard Kipling poem entitled "If." "If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve their turn long after they are gone... To hold on until there is nothing left in you except the will which says to them "hold on." It's been over twelve years since my battle with cancer. I didn 't make it to the Boston Marathon, but I'm proud to say that my life has been complete thanks to the great care I received from family and friends while I was battling the biggest race of my life. I remember after my recovery how influential Terry Fox was to me. I started running during Terry's Marathon of Hope. It was ironic that while taking part in those early Terry Fox runs and watching his courageous journey come to an end that I too would travel a similar road. Terry was not only a hero in his mission in Canada and worldwide in raising money for cancer research, he was my hero. Never give up hope. Remember to tell the people you love that you love them, and live each day to its fullest. -- Andy Turchyniak CMHA Calendar Winners For the Month of September The following arc the Clarington Minor Hockey Association calendar winners for the month of September. Hockey Injuries & The Psoas QUESTION: Telma, why are groin injuries so common in hockey players and how can they be avoided? Add knees to that list ol hockey-induced Injuries. Believe it or not, the two often work hand-in-hand. And prevention prevention is important to consider consider for a hockey player before lacing up. From a clinical perspective, perspective, let's focus on Ihe angle of the hip joint as a faclor in those particular injuries. Many athletes have tight PSOAS MUSCLES -- very deep back muscles which run along the LUMBAR SPINE then through the Iron! ol the hip and onto the Inner thigh. Its role Is twofold twofold as both a HIP FLEXOR and a BACK EXTENSOR. Chronic and long-standing tension on the psoas prodisposes prodisposes the athlete to standing in n stooped posture, with tho trip at an unhealthy angle. When this athlete skates, ho/sho Is not as ablo to stridu outward correctly. As a result, a groin and/or an Inner knee Injury are just waiting lo happen. happen. In rehabilitating llioso athletes, wo must lirst address Iho psoas tension bolero Iho groin and knoo will heal proporly. Improper or no treatment spoils ongoing trouble: trouble: tho groin and knoo injuries injuries will reoccur and continue lo plague a hockey player lor Iho rest ol his/her days. Romombor, musclas work In groups ol two: In tills case thoro nro hip flexors and I'll extensors working together to support tho body in action. One group allows us to bend at the hip (the psoas) the other other allows us to stretch our hip backwards (Ihe hamstrings). Thus, when the hip flexors are tight, the body's entire standing standing angle changes not just that of the hip. You are inclined forwards and your hips are more on an angle. And when this skater gets on the ice. Ihe additional force exorled by skating outwards creates a combination that loads to those injuries. In treatment, the overall condition ol the psoas muscle will, ol course be addressed. A prescription for prevention includes stretching tho psoas muscle during your warm up. Because the psoas muscle is a very deep muscle, to stretch it tho patient needs to perform what are known ns the Mackenzie oxtonsion-lypo exorcises which release the front part of tho hip joint. I strongly urge any nlhlolo that has suffered groin and knoo injuries should visit his/her physiotherapist before the hockey season is underway. underway. Having some muscle balancing balancing work done may prevent prevent those injuries from keeping keeping you on lire bench lor lire season.
