We have no trouble understanding how a scar on the knee makes it harder to bend the knee. But how can a scar in the front of the body. have.an:effecton, your low back pain?* - The problem with a scar is that when it is tight, it binds the skin to the underlying underlying muscles. This binding or adhesion mechanically does two related things: the posture is misaligned and the abdominal mùscles are weakened. Specifically with respect to posture, the scar pulls your head and neck forward and down, and your hips forward. As the body compensates compensates for this weakened posture, triggers or tender points form in the now tightened muscles especially especially the hip, the armpit and the neck. The end result is your back feeling tight and painful. Appendix, hysterectomy, hysterectomy, C-section and any scar on the abdomen often contributes contributes to low back pain through weakening posture and abdominal muscles. This mechanical cause for back pain is never even checked for. This is because who would have thought to check in the front of the body for the cause of back pain. You won't feel any pain around the scar, but because the back muscles muscles are now tight, you will feel low back pain. I have seen many patients improve in their neck and back pain when their scar tension is released. Treatment needs to be directed to the low back pain plus releasing the scar tension and all muscle triggers triggers that are now perpetuating perpetuating the weakened posture. We use the Electro Acuscope Pain and Stress Management Systems. Releasing the tension around the scar results in increased range of motion of the back and therefore less pain. It is then important important to stretch and strengthen the back and pelvic muscles to keep the problem from returning. If you have low back pain that has failed to respond to treatment you need to see for yourself ifyour abdominal scar is the reason. Call your physiotherapist physiotherapist today.
