A resolution from Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre at a meeting of regional council last week calls for a review of all branches of regional government in order to come up with the most efficient and cost-effective way of delivering services to the taxpayer. "We will look at absolutely everything," Mayor Hamre promised. She added that the decision to launch the study was the result of a brainstorming session among regional councillors on the subject of governance. "The direction that came out of the session was that the majority of us want to review all of this and cut out any and all duplication and give taxpayers the most efficient, efficient, cost-effective way of supplying their services," Mayor Hamre said. Two areas the study will cover include planning and public works. At the moment, both the Durham Region and the local municipalities have their own planning and works departments. The upcoming review will look at ' the possibility of amalgamating these services. :• Other areas under scrutiny of the review .process might include economic development and firefighting. The possibility of contracting out some regional or local services is also up for consideration. Mayor Hamre says if Durham doesn't commission a review, the provincial government might impose its own ideas. "And their way of doing it is to create a mega-city. None of us want that. Our constituents don't want it," she said. The Clarington mayor adds that it isn't just dollars and cents which will be considered. Levels of service will also be part of the study. The resolution passed by Durham's regional council last week calls for a steering committee to present a report by December 31st indicating how the review will proceed. Final recommendations from the process are to be completed by December 31 of 1999. Drumming Up Business From page 1 is a significant part of marketing strategy and conferences conferences represent a tremendous boost to host communities because they bring large numbers of people into the area for anywhere from one to five days at a time. As well, the Office is hard at work promoting the 25th Anniversary of Clarington and the year 2000. In an effort to get all councillors up to date on all economic economic development issues, the town will organize a two- day think tank in the new year to discuss the current blueprint for Economic Development and to further discuss discuss business attraction and retention. "We need to get all of the major players in the same room to discuss why businesses relocate in Clarington and why some businesses are not happy with Clarington," said Councillor John Mutton. "This council council has to get together witli staff and get some long- and short-term goals set." The think tank will include presentations from the municipality's Planning and Development and Economic Development Departments, the Board of Trade and the Regional Economic Development Department.
