In urban centres, single starts were down lo 67,200 units from 67,500 units. Multiple starts dropped to 47,500 units from 49,100 the previous previous month. "As expected, home building picked up in the Toronto area after the strikes while the Prairie region market also showed strength," said Louis Trolticr, Economist at CMHC's Market Analysis Centre. "Activity was lower in other areas as a result of slower job creation and lower consumer confidence." Starts in Prairies reached 25,700 units, a 10.8 per cent increase over August. In the multiple segment, starts were up to 6,500 units from 4,400. All three provinces posted substantial advances. Urban construction in Ontario decreased slightly to 47,700 units from 48,500 units the previous month. Single and multiple construction construction fell in most urban centres, offsetting offsetting the sharp rebound in Toronto's multiple activity. Residential construction in British Columbia was down 4.3 per cent to 17,700 units as higher levels of singlc-dctachcd activity did not compensate for lower levels of multiple multiple construction. Much of the drop' occurred in Vancouver due to less multiple projects. GROUP 1 MONTHS r u .
