Hospital care there cannot compare to care received here. Little Miss Danielle Hoogkamp and mother Julie (Hamilton) Hoogkamp, of Whitby, were guests of honour at a baby shower on Sunday, November 1, 1998, at the home of Shirley and Gerry Maslcrson, Bowmanvillc. Marsha Maslcrson and mother Shirley co-hosted the shower. Oma Narda Hoogkamp and Hazel Crago of Newcastle, were among the twenty guests. Newcastle Garage is now under new ownership. Joe Forget and George Hale are the proprietors. Wes Forget will still be doing restoration work there. We extend congratulations congratulations and we wish former garageman Charlie Anderson all the best in his new venture. A letter from the Salvation Army notified us that our adopted child "Vanessa" was no longer in their care. They offered to us a new five-year-old little girl who needs our love and support. A motion by Vi Ashton, seconded by Donna Barkey that we accept this new child was carried. Friendship report was given by Blaikie Rowsell. Jenny Bowman spoke about the "Interest Courses". The W.L baseball trophy for M.V.P. was presented to Andrina Matthie at the Community Awards night. Donna Barkey was our delegate to the Area Convention October 16 and 17 with the theme "Charting Our Course". Doris Hills gave the report of the District Executive Meeting prepared by Margaret Ford. The annual Fun Fair will be Thursday, October 22nd, at Maple Grove. The roll call "What I could do in the past but cannot safely do now", brought back many old memories such as "roller skating up Scugog Street to the forks in the road, or being able to put your foot behind your neck, or driving a horse trailer". Karen Dair of the West Group presided for the "Legislation" programme. The motto "Constitution Statement" was given by Jenny Bowman using the letters letters of "O'Canada" for parts of our hopes, laws, governments governments and Constitution. Vi Ashton introduced our guest speaker, Mayor Diane Hamre, telling of her municipal activities since 1985. Mayor Hamre said the 1997 elected council has 5 new members. Things scent to be working well and they have enthusiasm as well as good ideas. There are new businesses coming into Clarington which will help our tax dollars. She mentioned that Clarington has a voice with the G.T.A. and this committee will be reviewed in 3 years time. She pointed out the awareness of much more crime in Clarington and challenged us, as W.L members, to help where we can with the youth today. Next year is the 25th anniversary of the Region and Clarington. There are plans being made for some celebrations. Elaine Baker, on behalf of the membership, thanked Mayor Hamre for her enlightening and interesting talk. Donna Barkey led in the singing of all verses of the "Maple Leaf Forever" which is a history lesson in song. We also sang "Canada the Beautiful" accompanied by Dorothy Snowden at the piano. The F.W.I.O. draw by the East Group had winners of Bernice Watson, Doreen Doyle, Mary Millson, Betty Grant, Marj Crydcrman, Jenny Bowman, Trixie Vandcrgaast, Marjorie Prescott, Doreen Kelsey, Doris Flett, Donna Barkey, Cindy Ashton and Helen Hancock. The Cuddle Comforters were donated to the lire department this week to he given out to children involved in emergency situations, Above (left to right) firefighters Randy Cowan, Captain Mark Berncy, Chief Mike Creighton, and George Schroor were happy to Hike the quilts from Nancy O'Flaherty.
