After you read the spinal column this week 1 guarantee that the next time you look in the mirror you'll be thinking about posture. Posture is an indication of how healthy (or unhealthy) your spine is. Researchers who study people say that over 90% of North Americans have poor posture. Posture shows us a picture of how the spine may be positioned. The spine is the central frame from which the body gets its structure. If the posture is poor the spine is out of its normal alignment. When this happens the spine presses on the sensitive nerves travelling through the spinal column and out to the rest of the body. The purpose of chiropractic is to correct nerve interference. Nerve interference promotes sickness and disease. It robs our vitality and weakens our immune system. The spinal column consists of twenty-four small bones called vertebrae. Seven of these arc located in the neck. Twelve are found in the mid-back and five are in the lower back. The vertebrae stack one on top of the other, and when you look at them from front to back, they form a straight line, just like with good posture, If the spine is curved to the right or to the left it is often reflected in posture. Someone may have one shoulder that is higher than the other. If the spine is rotated, causing nerve interference, it is very difficult to see the posture problem unless you are skilled in properly checking posture. All chiropractors are highly skilled in checking posture. Most chiropractic offices will perform a postural check for you as a public service, but contact their office to be sure. Chiropractors call nerve interference vertebral subluxation. When the vertebrae are misaligned (subluxated), the flow of messages from the brain to all the other cells in the body is distorted. Not only docs this have an adverse affect on health, but because it distorts your perception of the world and compromises your ability to respond to the world, it can lead to psycho-emotional problems as well; when this happens to a significant number of people in a society it has a detrimental affect on the society as a whole. This misalignment of the vertebrae can often exist undetected and slowly undermine ones health. With this information you now can see the importance of good posture. Improving posture is just one of the many benefits a chiropractic lifestyle brings, To letmt more «bout chiropractic, health and wellness, Dr. Herron provides a Tuesday night health talk at Herron Family Chiropractic, 98 King St. \V. in Botvmanville, Sealing is often limited so ItSVP can he wade by Jihoning (905) 623-5509, The workshop runs each Tuesday from 6:00 /». m. to 6:30 |>.m. and is entitled "Half Hour to Health", 0 j Pi Big Crowd at Community Care Dinner by Isabelle Challice Quote - "If you want to make an easy job seem mighty hard, just keep putting putting off doing it". Several neighbours neighbours have remarked, we had already put away the lawn mowers, and now we have to get them out again. A rather strange but nice fall and we sure have enjoyed it. Capsule Comments with Neale McLean, B.Sc. Phm. On sunny winter days, wearing sunglasses is still important. Winter sun has the same amount of ultraviolet radiation as summer sun and can increase the risk of developing cataracts. It's a good time to remind parents about Reye's Syndrome, a condition that can strike children with the flu. It can be triggered by ASA products. Use only Acetaminophen to reduce fever and discomfort of the flu in children. If you aren't sure whether a product contains ASA or not, check with our pharmacists. There is some evidence that Vitamin E can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. It doesn't take much ... about 50 units a day to reduce the risk by one third. People are taking 400 units to help their prostate and reduce the risk of heart attacks as well. As we enter the winter holiday time of year, it's a good time to remind everyone that "healthy tan" is an oxymoron. With skin cancer on the rise, remember to protect your skin if you are visiting tropical climes. Also remember to bring enough of your prescribed medication with you. It isn't always easy to find the right medication in foreign countries. Pharmacist Orthotist Bowmanville Clinic Pharmacy Ltd. 222 King St. East Bowmanville, Ont.
