At the time of writing litis, it is beautiful outside. With a little snow, it looks like Christmas. It's been a busy week as usual. Monday night several ladies from the seventh concession concession and the surrounding area enjoyed a pot-luck meal at the home of Louise Statham and Dave Wilson. This is the second annual "meet your neighbour" event at Louise's beautiful home with good food, conversation conversation and company. Thanks Louise. Tuesday night was the ■ last night of bowling for the first half. The standings arc Hampton 53, Solina 45, Hi C's 32, Ncwtonshaw 25, Courlice 20 and My Team 5. Tim Jukes from the Hi C's had a single game of 353 and a 744 triple. It must have cost the Hi C's a lot of money to get Tim on their team. Steve Pleasancc still holds the high triple 781. Good going men! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We'll hear from you again on January 5, 1999. My thanks to Doug Caston for supplying the bowling to me. On Friday afternoon I had a surprise visit from Jim Coombes, the bowling man. He brought me a voucher for a turkey. He said "my team" won it. Lilly Belle, from "my team" really won, but she gave it to me. Jim also gave me some further reports. Don Taylor won dhe voucher for the Solina iTeam. Solina News Wednesday evening the Beavers and their leaders came to our door, sang some Christmas songs and left a little gift they made. Thanks boys. Wednesday cards at Hampton had 9 tables. Keen competition resulted in High - Ace Richards 94, Marg Hall 84, Muriel Bulson 83, Rod Simpson 81, Pat Simpson 79. Most lone hands - Ace Richards. Low - Bernice Renton. It was good of Ada Richards and Eldon McKay to look after the skunks for the evening. Lucky draws - Edna Manns, Ada Richards, (the Richards should have a good Christmas with so much money), Vivian Barrett, Meta Swain. They had some extra Christmas draws. These winners were: Muriel Bulson, Leone Wright, Win Brown, Rac Shackclton, Verna Bryant, Doreen Brock, Pat Simpson, Ada Richards (again), June Marchant and Fred Watson. The next card night will be Jan. 6, 1999. The committee at Hampton wish everyone a good holiday season. Ross and Marjorie Crydcrman entertained the Crydcrman family to a dinner dinner at Wong's restaurant in Whitby this past week. Murray Vice and Franc Svetcc were also guests. Wednesday at noon was the Solina Silver Set's December meeting. Co- Presidents Philip and Margaret Ford welcomed everyone and Philip asked the blessing. Over sixty members enjoyed a bountiful bountiful pot-luck meal. After the meal, everyone went to the upper hall, where Philip told his usual little joke and asked Elaine Baker for the minutes. Helen Lavender had made and donated a Gingerbread House. Tickets were sold and Mary Millson was the winner. Bernice Watson guessed the right number of Jelly Beans in a jar. Margaret Ford, accompanied accompanied by Werner Fehn, led in carol singing. Elaine Wotten gave a reading explaining why Santa Claus must be a woman. Mary Millson had a reading about "Keeping up With Granny". Margaret Ford sang an Australian Carol, again accompanied by Werner. Elaine Baker read a modem version of "The Night Before Christmas". The Taylor brothers, Bruce and Don sang three Christmas songs accompanied by Joyce Taylor. Philip Ford gave a recitation after which Bruce and Don entertained with three more well known songs of Christmas, ending with Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas. Everyone then enjoyed a "pass the parcel" game. Franc Svetcc won the prize. Fred Watson was the lucky winner of a turkey at Seniors Bowling on Thursday. Lloyd and Marion Broome must be proud of the accomplishment accomplishment of their granddaughter, Holly, who will be going to Lyon, France next month for the fifth annual indoor fast- pitch world cup tournament featuring 20 teams. These teams feature the best of women athletes. The Broome family held their Christmas gathering Saturday at Dennis Broome's. Doris Flctt entertained entertained a few neighbours Saturday evening, a game of cards and a good lunch. At Eldad Church on Sunday, Betty Grant and Mary Millson were greeters. Gold may be precious, and diamonds rare, but it's your friendship we value most of all. The newly formed Junior Choir and the Senior choir presented their ministry ministry of music for Christmas. I received a report from Bill Burns regarding the Hampton Cemetery and am sure many readers would be interested in it. Many loved ones rest there of families from Solina and surrounding surrounding communities. They keep the grounds in excellent condition and are commended commended for a job well done. Long Service Award Don Scott (right) received his 10-Year Medal from the Bowmanville Navy League of Canada Tuesday evening, Dec. 15th. Presenting the award during the Annual Sea Cadet Dinner were Bowmanvillc Navy League President Ron Cooke and Rae Abcrnethy. Smoke-Free Contest Winners! Winners in the Durham Region Health Department's "Open the Door to a Smoke- Free Home" contest were announced during a presentation presentation at Cullen Gardens. Almost 2,500 residents entered their homes in the community portion of the contest. Participants chose to make their homes smoke-free by not smoking or allowing anyone else to smoke in their homes. Thirty-six winners were randomly drawn representing different communities throughout the region. Shelley Rainforth of Ajax was the grand-prize winner and received a two-night deluxe package for two at Stc. Anne's Country Inn and Spa, valued at $1,000 (courtesy (courtesy of Habitrol Stop Smoking System and Novartis Consumer Health Canada Inc.).
