MPP Disappointed Over Legislation Lost Due To "Procedural" Quarrels This session of the Ontario Legislative Assembly ended on Friday, December 18th, at 12:10 a.m. It was rather a controversial ending to what has been a very long session. The opposition (Liberal & NDP) understandably wanted to debate the supply supply bill and the McLean/Thompson wrongful dismissal settlement. settlement. It is important to understand that many members of the government government made it clear that they were not supportive of the McLcan/Thompson decision. On the other hand, the government had a number of other important important pieces of legislation that it wanted to move forward forward and allow public hearings to take place during during the winter break. At the end of every session there is always a bulge of unfinished business. The three party House Leaders will try to work out an agreement about which legislation will proceed proceed and what bills will go forward for more public input. Usually, policy and politics clash and often the process is not very productive. productive. The Premier announced late on Friday that the House is adjourned (prorogued) until March 1999, or at the call of the government. However, I am very disappointed that a number number of important pieces of legislation have been lost because of a procedural quarrel, The Legislature has spent a significant amount of time on a number number of bills in first and second second reading as well as public hearings and now these bills are lost. Democracy and our parliamentary process is a fragile balance, but it is belter than any alternative I have heard about. An old quotation says it all, "I may disagree with what you say but I will defend your right to say it." The committee on "The International Year of Older Persons" (IYOP) has been meeting for the past month. This United Nations resolution has received support from most levels of government. government. The Canadian government government has established a Coordinating Committee and Ontario has set aside some $2.6 million to support support community events across the province. My riding is represented by Annabcile Sissons, Harold Hammond, Mavis Carlton, Sheri Jackson, Sally Barrie, Kent Farndalc and Doug Farndalc. This committee committee is reaching out to the entire community to develop ways to celebrate 1999 as, "the year of older persons". I encourage church groups, service clubs and community groups to contact contact any member of the committee as soon as possible possible to see how they can become involved. If you want information, please call my constituency office at 697-1501 or 1-800-661- 2433. Projects or applications applications must be submitted before January 29, 1999. This past week, it was my privilege to present a cheque on behalf of the Hon. Isabel Bassett, Minister of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation , to the Scugog Shores Museum. Ms. Susan Neale, curator of the museum was pleased to accept the cheque for some $8,000.00 as part of their operating grant. The province believes that the $2.6 million in annual funding is an important support for the 185 museums museums across Ontario. I want to thank our museum boards and staff for ensuring ensuring that our heritage is developed, protected and made accessible to the public. The Children's Aid Society of Durham Region will receive approximately $2.5 million in additional funds to ensure that children children arc being protected, that front line workers as well as fostcr-carc families, families, arc recognized and case management services arc enhanced. Durham Region lias been traditionally traditionally under funded and this is just one more example that our government is prepared to make changes to provide equitable support support for areas like Durham. Also being celebrated at this time of year arc Hannukah, which is the Jewish Festival of Lights and Kwanzaa, which is an African Festival of Lights. Every country, culture and religion generally celebrates celebrates this season with a festival of lights. In our Christian celebrations, celebrations, the star on top of our Christmas trees is another symbol of the importance of light. While travelling throughout my riding recently, I have been very impressed by the many wonderful Christmas light displays that I have seen in every community. The Old Scugog Road community has a display that attracts visitors from all over the area. This season is a wonderful wonderful time for families to gather, celebrate and be thankful. It is also a time to give gifts to others. Those who may be hungry, in need of help, old and perhaps alone and people who arc in hospitals should also be a part of our reflections at this lime of year. I encourage everyone to take time to share with someone less fortunate. The greatest gill we can give in this busy world is our time. From my family to yours, may the light of hope he in your life always. May you have a generous and joyful Christmas Season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. For Your Information !
