I I Village Shows its Spirit The Canadian Statesman, Boxvmanvillc, Wednesday, December 30, 1098 Page 9 by Hazel Crago A happy healthy and prosperous prosperous New Year to all! Do you make resolutions? Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve. Benjamin Franklin 1706- 1790. The Community Christmas Feast of 1998 held at the Newcastle Community Hall on Christmas Day proved to be a resounding success. About two hundred people enjoyed the dinner and shared in the afternoon of fun, laughter and entertainment. It was a fine turkey dinner prepared prepared and served by many volunteers. First class entertainment entertainment was provided by Lyle and Yvonne Bender, Dolores Bender-Hone and three sons, soloist Allanah Coles and pianist Dr. Debra Jefferson accompanied Debbie Laforet and the Purdy children. Gregory and Oliver Newcastle News Ward provided instrumental numbers and the DeVries Family sang their harmony numbers. A good time was enjoyed by all who participated. participated. Enough turkey dinners were prepared for Parkview residents and over one hundred hundred prepared turkey dinner meals went to Community Care. Community Spirit lives in the village of Newcastle. We have in our possession two keys on a ring found on the sidewalk on King St. West up the hill not far from the Newcastle Health Care Centre. Call us at 987-4201 for their return. Church Packed for Christmas Service by Betty Wright On Christmas Eve our church was more than full to capacity for our Christmas Eve gathering. Devon Thompson played a piano solo "Ava Maria" at the beginning of the service. The opening words were given by Becky and Emily Forster. We sang many beautiful Christmas Carols throughout the service. service. The choir sang several very suitable anthems for our candlelight service. Reverend Seli led us in the Call to Worship. There were several gospel readings read - Matthew 1:18-23 was read by Karen Welds, Luke 2:1- 7 was read by Ruth McGill and Luke 2:8-14 was read by Diane McGill, Luke 2:15-20 was read by Chris Jacobs, The lighting of the Christ Candle was done by Ralph Werry. Reverend Seli reflected on different Enniskillen News themes throughout the service. service. Near the end of the service we had the sharing of the light. We begin this tradition with the Christ Candle, passing our light to the person next to us. As we shared this wonderful light, we looked into the eyes of the person receiving the light and we were to offer them a one word Christmas Blessing. On the piano there was a beautiful white angel placed by the family in memory of the late Lorn a Graham. After the last hymn, Reverend Seli wished everyone a Merry Christmas and I now want to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. On Sunday, December 27th we worshipped together together with Tyrone congregation congregation at our church at 10:00 me. RÏM ©J.P. Capsule Comments with Neale McLean, B.Sc. Phm. Canadians are drinking less alcohol. In 1977 usage was 130.8 litres per person. In 1997, consumption was 99.4 litres. That Includes all home brew and brew- on-site products and duty free sales. Can you take too much Vitamin Cl There is some evidence to say yes. Vitamin C protects cells from injury by naturally- occurring free radicals. It seems that 200 to 500 mg daily Is the right amount but taking more might encourage free radical damage. If you use blood glucose testing meters for good diabetes control, keep the test strips In their foil wrap till fust before use. Exposure to the air for as little as two hours can give a falsely low reading. We eat about 19 teaspoons (about 304 calories) of sugar dally from all sources. If we were to cut that amount In half, we would lose 16 pounds In one year, How's that for a New Year's resolution! Another year has gone by and I want to wish you all a very happy and healthy 1999. Thank you for all your kind comments about this column. We look forward to serving you throughout the coming year with great service by our great staff. Happy New Year! But, for the emergency emergency department at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, December 10th was just.as "McHappy." The proceeds from McHappy Day and continued donations from McDonald's customers resulted in a $3,000 donation for the purchase of a tym- panogram for the emergency department. Here, Dr. Vieira and nurse Delores McMillan demonstrate the device with help from Ben Wilson, son of Steve and Jcannic Wilson, owners of McDonald's in Bowmanville. A tympanogram is an instrument that provides an exact measurement of pressure in the middle ear that is being exerted on the eardrum. It allows the physician to make a more informed decision over treatment choices to relieve pressure and pain. v.s u PONTIAC/BUICK/GMC PRESENTS r~YZ7zir I \\ u uU PlRhW'i Hr » 6•£>*>.. c-'Jfiift. ilfâhtiaÜ JtSÿïfei.Mlîf i j vAl r-t! uü 'M>7/ i .vi.. :.Jl SmartLease sL:')L';)ifl i (■/ :/ Mi-| . . .... /36 months/St.500 down (excludes freight $645) Purchase poymenl/5645 freight required Financing no SECURITY DEPOSIT Up To 48 Months.
