The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, December 30, 1998 Paye 5 Memories of Christmas 70 Years Ago by Edgar Wright Tliis is written on the Tuesday before Christmas 1998. It is snowing quite heavily and blowing too, the snowplough and sanders arc going by periodically periodically and 1 thought of the times before the snowplough snowplough era. One of the times I remember took place 70 years ago in the winter of 1929. I was 16 at the time and worked at the Werry farm 2 miles north of Enniskillen. Ern Werry had just bought a 1929, two ton Ford truck and occasionally went to the Stock Yards in Toronto with livestock. This certain day when he returned as far as Bowmanvillc, lie was informed at the Coronation Cafe that the road north of Bowmanvillc (Old Scugog Rd.) had filled in with blowing snow and was impassable for ears. In the restaurant at the time was Dr. Ferguson, his wife and Annie Okc, they had come to Bowmanvillc from Enniskillen earlier that day and were stranded because of the drifting snow. Ern was prepared to put the chains on his truck and offered them a ride to go as far as possible, they travelled north for about a mile as far as Gand's Corner and then decided to phone home for help (from Gand's home). I was at a neighbour's house (Borland's) playing cards when I got a phone call around 7 p.m. The instructions were to go home (Worry's) and harness harness up a team of horses (no electricity then) hitch them to the sleigh and bring lots of blankets - go till you meet them, they would travel as far as they could towards Hampton and that is exactly how far they had travelled when I met them about 2 hours later, to rescue the Enniskillenitcs and to resume their homeward way by team and sleighs. To finish my story, Dr. Ferguson was our country Doctor at Enniskillen at that time and got a call to Bowmanvillc Hospital earlier earlier that day, so his wife and Annie Okc went along to attend a Presbyterial not knowing that by the time they would want to return, the roads would be blocked by drifting snow (no snowploughs then). It is quite appropriate to say that when Ern Werry had phoned for me to come to meet them, lie made sure to tell me that Annie Okc (she was also 16) was with them and that would make my trip more interesting. (It was). Eight years later we were married and now we have been married over 61 years and arc still on speaking terms. We had 5 children, one deceased (Gloria), 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. My wife Annie will verify this is a true story. Words cannot express how one feels to see how an idea can lake shape and in exactly four weeks lime culminate on Christmas Day into such a special day not only for ourselves but the community as a whole. We should be all proud of ourselves. No government handouts. This was definitely Community helping Community as Community neighbours. We would like to list all the names of the people and organizations who participated in their own way but there is the slight chance we might miss someone and this we would not want to do. We tried to thank everyone personally with a warm handshake, a big smile and the sincercst "Thank You"!!!!! There is one person, however, who deserves special recognition and she is Isobcl Rappaporl, At the tender of age of 86, it was she that brought the idea of the Community Christmas Feast to Newcastle. This year, at 90 years of age, she was still going as strong as ever and very much involved with the organizing of the Community Christmas Feast. In fact true to her convictions and beliefs that a true traditional turkey dinner must have a hot cooked turkey right from the oven to the table, she got up at 6:00 a.m. Christmas Day to cook a turkey so that it would be hot and ready for the Christmas Feast. Mrs. Rappaporl, it is you and people like yourself yourself that serve as an inspiration inspiration and role model to those around you. While you may choose to slay in anonymity for most of the year, we have a lot to learn from people such as yourself. yourself. While the United Nations resolution has decreed that 1999 is to be the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP), every year should be made to recognize the contributions contributions made by older adults to the world.
