The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, January 7, 1998 Doug Brown Collects Harness Driving Title Bowmanvillc driver Doug Brown continued his mastery over the competition on the Ontario Jockey Club's (OJC) harness racing circuit in 1997. The 41-year-old captured his tenth consecutive provincial provincial driving title, winning 307 races over the course of the last year. His nearest rival was Randy Waplcs, who finished finished second with 224 trips to the winner's circle. Brown has led the Woodbine/Mohawk circuit in wins every year since 1988. He did; however, relinquish his stranglehold on first place in purse earnings. That honour for 1997 went to Steve Condren, who finished with $3.88 million. That's slightly ahead of Brown's total of $3.63 million. To'try and increase attendance figures for 1998, the OJC has eliminated the $4.00 general admission charge at-Woodbine and Mohawk racetracks. General admission to the races is now free. OHL ALL-STAR -- Courticc's Scott Barney has been selected to play for Team East in the 1998 OHL All-Star game in North Bay on January 13. Barney was the leading point-getter in the three star standings for the Peterborough Petes after 33 games. By claiming top spot, he gained an automatic automatic entry onto the team. Barney, a Los Angeles King draft pick (2nd round), is having a great season with Peterborough, leading the team in scoring. Representing the Oshawa Generals will be forward Kevin Colley, who just returned from the World Junior Championships, where he represented the United States. Despite being a resident of Collingwood, Colley was born in the U.S. while his dad was playing professional hockey in the minors. SUPER BOWL PARTY -- There will be a Super Bowl Parly at the Town Hall in Newcastle on Sunday, January 25. The big winner from the event will be the Food Bank, as non-perishable food items will be collected. There will be a big screen TV, a chili cook-off, and a shuttle bus service for those in attendance. Tickets can be obtained from Larry Carroll at 987-4086. . No doubt there will be some friendly wagering done on the outcome of the game, but the money that changes hands will come'nowhere close to the largest legal sports wager ever accepted by a casino on the Super Bowl. A bettor walked into the Mirage in Las Vegas in January of 1995 and wagered $2.4 million cash on San Francisco against San Diego at a money-line of 1-8 odds. He won, collecting $300,000. 7-Eleven Peewees Register Two Victories After Holidays The 7-Eleven Pcewee team has come off the Christmas holiday strong, determined, and working hard as a team to beat Harman Cordova 5-4.
