The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, February 4, 1998 Page 3 Carbon Monoxide Kills From page 1 changes to the fire code will soon require all homes to have at least one smoke alarm. Requirements for carbon monoxide detectors apply to new dwellings that have solid fuel- Rctailcrs arc re-stocking shelves as fast as they can, keeping pace with a huge increase in the demand for carbon carbon monoxide detectors. It is Reinert's strong recommendation recommendation that anyone with fossil fuel heating heating systems, and certainly anyone installing a wood burning stove in an older home should get a CO detector. Detectors Save Lives He reminds residents that a carbon monoxide detector "definitely saved the lives" of a Bowmanvillc family two winters ago, when the odorless gas built up in their home due to a cracked heat exchanger on the furnace. Reinert stress that installing a CO detector docs not take away the need to have a smoke detector in your home. CO detectors come in two basic models: battery powered or plug-in. Price range is usually anywhere between $35 to $70. Most manufacturers recommend placing the device outside the sleeping area. Besides installing detectors, home- owners should have their chimneys and furnaces checked every year, Reinert adds. Poisoning Symptoms Can Resemble the Flu Carbon monoxide poisoning mimics flu. Symptoms include fatigue, nausea, dizzy spells, blurred vision and confusion. Unlike flu, however, which usually strikes only one member of a family before being passed on, carbon monoxide poisoning affects everyone in the household at once. They all have flu-like symptoms simultaneously. "If yoiir CO detector sounds, and the family has flu-like symptoms, there is probably a problem," says Clarington Fire Prevention Officer Randy Reinert. "Get out immediately and dial 911." If your CO detector goes off and no one has flu-like symptoms, ventilate ventilate the house, go outside and get a trained technician to check out the furnace and fireplace as soon as possible. Many detectors are designed to sound before the adverse symptoms associated with CO occur. Another good indicator of the presence of carbon monoxide is if symptoms disappear after leaving home for a few hours. Don't put yourself at risk by letting your car warm up in an attached garage because gases can seep into the home. And never barbecue dinner dinner in a closed garage. ; TJ'S MOTORSPORT CAFE presents Thé Ultimate sAuto Racing Contest!!! 5 5 You could win a trip for two to the ÿ "Southern 500" in Darlington, S.C ^ including hotel accommodations. j: Prizes awarded for 2nd and 3rd place plu 5 weekly prize for top point-getter. ■i Join the "Fantasy Cup" Nascar Challenge ij Only $30.00 for the year! 5 Choose your own "Fantasy ÿ Race Team" plus trade weekly 5 to improve your team. The 30 by 80 foot extension will allow for a pair of dressing rooms, a meeting room which could hold up to 50 people, an equipment storage room and a small mechanical room. The O.A.A.A. wants to raise $210,000 to cover the cost of the extension, and are hoping to have one-half of the cost by September, with the fund-raisers topping $50,000 by the end of February. Bester told the members of the Durham Central Agricultural Society on Saturday, Jan. 31, "there will be no cost to the fair board." The one-storey extension will mean there will be a loss of four parking spaces, but, the air- conditioning unit will be placed on top. To donate funds for the extension, call Bester at 983-5584.
