Ken Davies Memorial Tournament On Saturday, February 14, the Ganaraska Wolves Volleyball Club will be hosting the annual Ken Davies Volleyball Tournament to be held at Bowmanvillc and Clarke High Schools. It is a Juvenile Boys' age tournament tournament and will host teams from all over Ontario and Quebec. As mentioned above, it is a memorial tournament for Ken Davies. A native of Kendal, Ken was born on September 8, 1971. His outstanding athletic abilities allowed him to excel in many sports. He was an MVP with the Darlington soccer team, MVP with the senior basketball team, MVP with the senior volleyball team, and Athlete of the Year at Clarke High School in Newcastle. He was chosen for the Provincial Team for the Canada Games in Saskatoon in 1989 which, as he put it, "was the dream of a lifetime". Ken's goals were "to become a national team player and a physical education teacher", and to that end he worked very hard at both academics and volleyball. According to his Provincial team coach, "he was a quietly intense and dedicated .worker. He was one of the most unselfish and coachablc players I have ever worked with". Ken was a quiet individual with a rich inner life. He liked to play golf, soccer and read; however, according to his own words, "it was competition" that was the driving force that led him to engage in highly elite.and competitive competitive programs. Of course, Ken's idea of playing sports was "to play 100% all of the time". While returning from a tournament in the fall of 1989, Ken's life was tragically tragically taken from him in a car accident. His example and memory will always be with us. As the years go by, Ken Davies remains in our memory memory as powerful as ever. For new generations of athletes, however, Ken Davies may only be the name of a tournament tournament they play in every year. It is important to educate our new athletes about who Ken Davies was and why there is an award presented in his honour every year. The Ken Davies Memorial Award is presented annually at the Ontario Juvenile Provincial Championships. It is awarded awarded to a male age division athlete who demonstrates the Playoff Tie for Lange's The Lange's Foto Source Toros started their round robin round of the York Simcoc playoffs tying the Uxbridge Stars 1-1. Ryan Hibbard held off the Stars' shooters in the third to preserve- preserve- the tic. The Toros received two goal performances from Justin Ross and Michael Taylor to help down Ajax 5-1. Ajax took the early lead and then found themselves in the penalty box as the Toros took this advantage to earn the two points for the win. Michael Daly was the other goal scorer. Assists were awarded to Michael Daly, Jesse Bradburn, Jason Emond and Andy Chamberlain. The team competed in the Nepean Hockey Tournament and unfortunately, had a hard time getting a win. A good time vvas enjoyed by all participants, taking part in all the winter festivities offered in Qtta\va. , , qualities of determination, leadership, athletic ability and sportsmanship as exemplified by Ken Davies himself. Dustin and Darryl Reid of the Ganaraska Wolves have both been recipients of the prestigious award, Dustin in 1991 and Darryl in 1993 and 1994, the only individual to ever receive the award two years in a row. This is a very special tournament to the Ganaraska Wolves and the family of Ken Davies who arc involved with the development of the club and the continuation of this tournament and award. Hopefully, many spectators will be present to watch some excellent volleyball, a sport dear to the heart of Ken Davies.
