The sales pace of the existing home market, which was stimulated by declining mortgage rates in early 1997, is expected to slow in 1998 as supplies tighten and prices firm up. Sales through the MLS system arc expected to reach 326,200 transactions in 1998 and 324,500 in 1999. In Ontario, rising consumer consumer confidence and active resale markets will push housing starts up by 10 per cent to 59,500 in 1998 and further to 63,000 in 1999. Total housing starts in Quebec arc forecast to reach 28,000 units this year and to level off next year, as the provincial market benefits front affordable home prices and some improvement in the migration balance.
