Cutbacks Mean Higher Taxes Provincial cutbacks will mean a bigger Durham tax bill, according to Regional Chairman Roger Anderson. The head of the Durham Region spoke to members of the Bowmanville K-40 club earlier in the week and brought the group up to date on some of the challenges challenges facing Durham. He reported that the provincial downloading means Durham Region will have $ 10.3 million less to work with in the upcoming budget. "Durham Region was hit harder than any other 905 region by provincial downloading," he explained. And, while no councillor councillor wants to increase property property tax, such a move is preferable to alternatives such as closing regional seniors' homes or laying off police. The regional chair also mentioned that the downloading downloading has had its impact on Durham's area municipalities municipalities too. If you include them in the calculations, the provincial cutbacks have meant a reduction of about $15.7 million for both local and regional budgets. To Durham's chair, amalgamation of services may be one answer. He doesn't support mergers of municipalities, but predicts predicts there may be more economical ways to deliver deliver services through amalgamation. amalgamation. For example, lie points out that the average taxpayer taxpayer doesn't care who responds to 911 emergency emergency calls or who picks up the garbage, so long as the work gets done. "I think there arc opportunities opportunities for us in the Region to find better ways of doing business," he observed. Despite the fiscal crunch, Durham's chairman chairman believes the Region of Durham faces a "bright future." And lie assured the Kinsmen Club that his enthusiasm for the job of chairman hasn't diminished. diminished. "It's a great job. I get to meet an awful lot of people," people," he said. As a Kinsmen Club member himself, lie paid tribute to the all-Canadian service organization for starting him out on the "right path" and allowing him to give something back to the community. It's a trait common to Kinsmen, regardless of the town in which they find themselves. "You look around your municipality and you'll see something that was built by Kinsmen," lie observed. Regional Meetings On Rogers Cable? Durham's Regional Chairman predicts regional residents residents may soon be able to see proceedings from Durham council meetings on the cable channel. Roger Anderson told a Bowmanville audience that Rogers Cable TV may be televising the meetings later in the year, although the matter is still subject to budget approvals. The Regional Chair was addressing members of the Bowmanville K-40 Club Tuesday evening, February 17lli, at the Port Darlington Marina.
