PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, FEBRUARY 7,2001 Winter Games raises money and awareness for special needs kids BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor It was a day of fun, fund-raising and raising awareness. The Durham Winter Games held at Iroquois Park Sports Centre recently raised about $100,000 for Variety Village Village programs in Durham Region and helped spread the word about the organization, organization, which has been serving children children with special needs since 1981. "This region is rich in people who puts words into actions," says Joe Mill- age, the managing director of Variety Village and a Whitby resident. "You have to give people at the Royal Bank all the credit in the world," adds Millage, noting bank employees and their families and friends were instrumental instrumental in organizing and staffing the day and soliciting sponsorships. The Games were held in conjunction conjunction with the Whitby Steelhawks sledge hockey organization. Corporate sponsors and public officials, including Whitby Mayor Marcel Bmnelle, Pickering Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs and Durham Region Chairman Roger Anderson, Anderson, joined kids and adults with disabilities disabilities on the ice for a round-robin tourney. "The corporate sponsors paid for the privilege of playing with the kids, kids who don't normally get put in a leadership position," says Millage. Officially, the Pickering entry won the round-robin event, but it's the kids who are the real winners. Lisa Gallagher of the Royal Bank in Pickering and Millage came up with the idea for the Durham Winter Gaines two years ago. The event raised $60,000 last year and although Gallagher Gallagher has since been transferred out of Durham, her former colleagues picked up the ball. Carol Browne of the Bowinanville Royal Bank, who served as Games' chairman this year, says about 120 volunteers volunteers were involved in making the day a success. "These activities teach us all about ability instead of disability - about integration integration and active living," says Browne. "It is a powerful experience for the teachers and students - all of them." The funds raised will go towards a number of outreach programs in Durham, including some pilot projects, says Millage. The money will also provide all the sports gear special needs children require. require. He says, as an example, nine sleds will be available for children, so if a Durham school goes public skating, kids with special needs can also take part. It will also help with a new Variety Village initiative called Fitness Friends will also be introduced in February, where able-bodied students arc teamed with physically challenged students to ensure full participation in recess and lunch-time activities. The bottom line is pretty simple. Whether it's the Durham Winter Games, or any of a number of Variety Village programs, it's people helping people.
