L~ I Entry deadline: February 28th, 2000 Financial Lifestyles Q, A. What type of investments do you recommend when economists are predicting a recession? My investment recommendations are not based upon the various phases of the business cycle. Your specific investment strategy should be reflective of your short, medium and Deborah Kohlsmith long-term goals. If you need cash, Financial Planner keep cash on hand because during a recession it would not be wise to liquidate an equity portfolio to come up with cash. My suggestion would be to have enough liquidity within your portfolio for your short and mid, term goals and continue investing to achieve your long terpn goals. Our dreams should not be dependent upon whether or not the economy is in an expansion phase or a recession. At the moment, it would appear as if many economists are contradicting themselves - with interest rates on the decline and inflation relatively stable - let's hope for a soft landing in Canadal â REGAL CAPITAL PLANNERS LTD. 108 King Street East Bowmanville 905 623-1936 I've noticed that paint stores offer different qualities and price ranges of paint. What's the difference? A Most paint manufacturers • produce paints in 3 or more different qualities by simply adjusting the Ingredients used in manufacturing. A "top of the line" paint will usually perform well In all respects, where a cheaper paint may perform well In only some respects or no respects. Some of the differences you may notice are: The better paint Dou 9 Abernethy usually has more body to it, resulting In a more effortless, splatter resistant application. The belter paint will dry to a uniform finish with reduced brush marks. The better paint will usually hide (cover) better and spread easier, usually resulting In less paint to do the job. The better paint will usually withstand more washing and wear and tear. The better paint will usually adhere better and longer. The old adage "You get what you pay lor" certainly applies to paint. A Opals are very beautiful e stones especially ones that can reflect back the interesting array of colours that appear when turned in the light. True, opals do require some tender loving care, in that they are a fragile stone because of the fact they are a gelled silica and have been known to n ,, contain as much as 20% water. Ron Hoo P er To care for your opal we suggest removing your ring when doing dishes, etc. & when your hands will be in hot and cold water and if you are doing gardening or other potentially abusive work. To clean use a cup full of luke warm non abrasive soapy water and a soft brush. If you would like to bring your ring in, we will give you a free estimate for replacement of your stone; ■ : . ••. 1 •' fiHirDDTi >5U ooper s J< ewellers Ltd. (Est. 1945) 39 King St.W., Downtown Bowmanville 623-5747 mums Would I be better off paying down my mortgage or contributing to an RRSP? Laura Sciore AIIG.CLU, CFP A This is Canada's classic e chicken and the egg dilemma. The best answer - do both - is unrealistic for most people. Both options are sound financial choices. One option, which combines the best of both worlds, is to contribute to an RRSP and use the resulting tax refund to pay down your mortgage. Some financial advisors recommend people maximize their RRSP and use the resulting tax refund to pay down your mortgage. Some financial advisors recommend people maximize their RRSP before paying down a personal debt like a mortgage, unless the interest rate on the mortgage is at least 3% higher than their average RRSP return. This rule of thumb depends on the length of time remaining on your mortgage - the less time left, the more advantageous it may be to contribute to an RRSP. Buying an RRSP is a good decision for your future. If you are considering an RRSP, I can help you choose the investment option best suited to your needs. o9 the co-opeïâtoïÊ A Better Place For You'" 102 King St. E., Bowmanville 697-2262 Q, Is it common to deny the death of a loved one? Paul Morris A There's a world of difference • between knowing something and believing it. While we tend to take good news at face value, we have a knack for resisting bad news. No where is this more true than in the matter of death. While all of us know we must one day die, we tend to Ignore or deny this simple truth. Even when faced with the proximity of our death, or the death of someone close to us, we may go to great psychological lengths to escape dealing with this reality. To psychologists, this is known as DENIAL. Denial may last lor a lew moments, a few days or months, or it may never go away. Some days, we may be able to deal quite openly with the Impending death: other days, we may be unable to lace It. It Is a protective reaction, designed to defend us from shocking and overwhelming news. In this way It can be natural, even healthy: but eventually we must learn to accept the ultimate reality. We have recently moved into a smaller home and I am having a problem arranging my previous furniture into my living room. Can you help? Downsizing is a bigger challenge than upsizing. This is when a tooth colored resin is bonded to your teeth, then sculpted into the proper shape. The resin forms a durable, stain-resistant surface that can be polished to mimic the texture of your natural teeth. Bonding can be used to eliminate gaps between teeth, to restore chipped teeth or to fill in cavities.
