THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, FEBRUARY 21,2001 PAGE 5 Shortage of family doctors 'an international problem': Lakeridge Health CEO SHORTAGE from page I "It's a moving target ... We could use about 30 to 40 across Durham," he says. The CEO says Durham's doctor shortage is part of a much broader issue. "This is not a local problem. It's an international problem," remarks Mr. Lemon. Two major factors have contributed contributed to the Canadian shortage, says the CEO. First, a federal government government decision in the 1980s that reduced reduced the number of training positions positions for doctors meant "most (Canadian) (Canadian) medical schools were cut back some." And that means, "We are now training significantly less (doctors) than we need in Canada." The issue has been being addressed to some decree decree over the past five years, but as a result of the decision two decades ago, "we have a problem that will continue for a couple of years," he predicts. The second factor, says Mr. Lemon, is the "increasing urbanization urbanization of Canada." Physicians tend to want to practice in more urban areas, so they can be part of a larger group of doctors. That's more of a problem in the rural areas of northern Ontario, notes Mr. Lemon. "Bowmanville has fewer docs than we'd like, but we're not talking about a really desperate situation," he says. Mr. Lemon believes the renewal of Durham's hospital facilities, such as the building of the new cancer centre in Oshawa, will help draw doctors of all types, including specialists, to the area. The so-called "brain drain" to the United States isn't a huge factor, says Mr. Lemon, though he admits, "It's hard to make general statements. [v-j: "U.S. recruitment is a factor in J some specialties," notes Mr. Lemon, and in some parts of the U.S., universities universities are training more specialists than family doctors, which means general physicians from Canada are often welcome. But, "that has slowed down some in recent years," says Mr. Lemon. The lack of doctors does make a difference at local walk-in clinics and emergency rooms, says Ms. Kooy. "The impact on the hospital and after-hours clinic is that ernerg and the after-hours clinic becomes the family doctor. If they're not acutely ill, they're going to have to wait longer to be seen" in the emergency, room, says Ms. Kooy, adding expansion expansion of the local clinic's hours isn't likely, since "our family doctors run that too." Politicians snowed in at retreat A retreat for Regional councillors last week was extended an additional night due to poor weather conditions. Durham Region held a retreat at the Fem Resort near Orillia Feb. 7 and 8 to provide councillors with an update on the upcoming budget process. Although the retreat was scheduled to wrap up Thursday, some councillors stayed an extra night due to a large snowfall and poor driving conditions, said Durham Chairman Roger Anderson. Me estimates the extended stay cost an additional $2,500 on top of the $5,000 planned. ★ Oscar Lopez ★ RRSPs 5 Year Rate 5.40% < o D Û Full Range of Mutual Funds*at all branches The RRSP season is upon us.
