THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MARCH 7, 2001 PAGE 9 Generals eliminated from playoff contention «ill BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor It's finally official - for (lie first time since 1977, the Oshavva Generals won't be invited to the Ontario Hockey League's playoff party. The Generals were officially eliminated eliminated from the post-season by virtue of a 3-0 loss to Sudbury Sunday at the Civic Auditorium, the eighth straight win by the Wolves. Oshawa opened the season winless in its first nine games (0-7-1-1) digging a hole from which it never recovered. Coach and general manager George Burnett made 11 trades this season, trying trying to improve the team and since that futile start to the season, the club has gone a slightly more respectable 17-26- 54. "There were a lot of moves made and a lot of questions, but the guy making the moves knows what it takes to make a champion," says assistant coach and assistant general manager Mike Futa, who handled the bench Sunday while Burnett was on a scouting mission as the Generals prepare to draft as high as second overall. "Oshawa is not used to picking as high as it will in this draft." The Generals gave a decent decent account of themselves Sunday against the Wolves, but were unable to solve net- minder Mike Smith, who made 29 saves to record his second shutout of the season. Sudbury struck early in each of the first two periods and added an empty-netter to seal it. Canadian national junior junior team member Jason Jaspers scored Sudbury's first two goals, two minutes into each period, while Bow- manville's Chris Kelly finished finished off a three-point evening with an empty net marker. "I can't question our work, we just didn't put the puck in the net," says Futa. "They have a couple of kids off the world junior team and some first-round NHL picks. I thought we battled extremely extremely hard, but didn't finish." Oshawa was handed five power play chances in the first period alone, but didn't really threaten, finishing the period with just six shots on goal. Still, Futa was pleased the Generals, basically playing out the string, didn't turn in a sloppy effort. "Look at that team (Sudbury). (Sudbury). That's depth. This is a year they decided to go for it and there's still talk (Taylor) Pyatt may be back (from the New York Islanders). It's a team I'd bet to win the East (Conference). Earlier in the year they came in here and walked all over us." The Generals finished the weekend with one win in three games against opposition opposition from northern Ontario, but still managed three of a possible six points. Oshawa picked up a single point for Friday's overtime loss in Sault Ste. Marie, then went into North Bay and beat the Centennials 4-3 Saturday.
