Washer MAYTAG 7 Our lowest prices of the season Green Gaels open season May 5 BY BRAD KELLY Spurts Editor CLARINGTON - The defending Canadian cliampion Clarington Green Gaels will open the 2001 regular season at the scene of their only loss in league play during the 2000 campaign. Tire Green Gaels will open the Ontario Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. 13 season in Nepean on Saturday, May 5 in the first game of a weekend series in eastern eastern Ontario. The following day, the team will play in Gloucester before returning returning home. Last season, the Green Gaels finished finished with a league best 19-1 record, the only blemish an 8-7 overtime loss in Nepean in the third game of the season. season. New general manager Doug Lucy says the overnight trip for the games to the cast so early in the season is by design. design. "I picked that weekend so we could do some team building," he says of the two-day trip. "It's going to be the first time for some of these players in junior, there will be a lot of new members on the team and the coaches and staff arc new. It was important," to get away and help build some team chemistry, he adds. Currently, the Green Gaels are holding holding a combined training camp with the Jr. A Whitby Warriors in Brooklin. The Green Gaels will break from that camp and begin their own at the Darlington Sports Centre April 24. After playing in Nepean and Gloucester to start the season May 5-6, the team will host its home opener on Thursday, May 10 against Mimico. Lucy says there are between 4045 players attending the training camp in Brooklin, with that number expected to drop to 30 by the time the Green Gaels branch off to begin their ow n tryouts. I've been really impressed with the camp," says Lucy. 'The midget teams (in Whitby) have done well in the past four years and there is lots of talent there." There have also been some pleasant surprises, with a couple of players returning returning to the fold who have been away from the game for a couple of years, he says. "We'll definitely be competitive." The Jr. B league has expanded to include include 22 teams this season, up from 17, with the Green Gaels slotted in the East Division with Scarborough, Barrie, Mimico, Huntsville and Oakville. The teams will play a home-and-home series, series, as well as cross-over games against teams from the Far East, West and Far West divisions for a total of 20. The Green Gaels will play the majority majority of home games on Thursday nights, with the odd Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday added into the mix. Playoffs will begin on July 6, but there is still some uncertainty as to whether Ontario will be represented at the Founder's Cup Canadian Championships, Championships, which the Green Gaels hosted and won last season. The tournament was originally DOUGLUEY 'We'll definitely be competitive.' awarded to Calgary, but it couldn't host it, so the event was switched to Edmonton. Edmonton. Because of floor availability, Edmonton Edmonton can't host the tournament in late August and would like to move the date back to earlier in the month. That presents a conflict for the traditionally traditionally strong teams in Ontario. "Because of expansion, we can't get our playoffs over in time to send a team," out to the Founder's, says Lucy, "so we've asked for a change in the date. "Right now there is a lot of political political football going on, but I'm sure we will end up with" a team in the national national championships, he says confidently. Bad news, good news for Redmen this season BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Writer WHITBY - A successful mix of youth and experience led the Brooklin Redmen to the Mann Cup national championship last September. September. While much of the youth will return return with invaluable experience gained from the championship run, the team will have trouble replacing at least two, and probably three, key veterans. Captain John4Î 7 uscOÿS|s- : gone ; ; into "seini-rètifeme'nt", ineahinghe r will join co-coaches Elmer Tran and Mark Evans behind the bench and possibly suit up for the occasional occasional game. Eric Perroni, who together with Fusco had 31, years of experience and won nine Mann Cups with the Redmen, has retired. Glenn Clark, the next most senior senior player on the team at 31, seemed a natural to assume the captaincy, captaincy, but he is seriously considering considering leaving the Redmen to play in British Columbia this summer. "It's a good opportunity, it's timing timing more than anything," says Clark, who confirms it is likely he will leave if certain financial considerations considerations are met. A high school teacher in Richmond Richmond Hill and member of the NLL's Toronto Rock, Clark says he and wife Shelley have friends and family in B.C. and are looking forward forward "to an extended vacation out west" this summer. "I've got more years behind me than ahead of me," says Clark, who won his second Mann Cup with the Redmen in September. "I kept coming coming back because we were building toward something and we got there... It's a little easier to walk away now." There is potential for an even more devastating loss. If talk of a summer Field lacrosse league in the United States comes to fruition, the Redmen would probably probably lose the services of Gavin Front, the OLA's rookie-of-the-year and a key playoff performer last summer. But the news is far from all bad for the Redmen, who will welcome back a corps of players in their early- to mid-20s. Shawn Williams, Nick Trudeau, Steve Toll, Gary Rosyski and Ken Millin will capably carry the offence, offence, big Dan Ladouceur will anchor anchor the defence and goalies Rob Blasdell and Phil Wetherup offer a potent one-two punch. Those eight are among 16 Redmen Redmen currently playing in the NLL, which means the troops should be in game shape come time for the season opener May 23 at Six Nations. Nations. "We're hoping all the younger guys will be back and we'll go out west and win it again," says general manager Bob Vesey. "We're not planning on making too many changes." The Redmen, 13-5 in the OLA Major Series a year ago, will play two extnw'eague games this season. The first of 10 home dates is scheduled scheduled for May 23 against Six Nations. Nations.
