f PAGE A4 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 18,2001 One more meeting on school's fate Days are likely numbered for Mitchell's Corners school BY JENNIFER STONE Stiff Writer CLARINGTON Mitchell's Corners Public School is one step closer to closure at the end of this school year. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board voted recently to hold a public meeting April 19, to gather input from the community on the fate of the 43-year-old school. A committee formed to look into die school's future future has recommended closure closure of the building at the end of June. Still, the board will look at points raised at next week's public input session session before making a final decision. "It was a difficult (decision)," (decision)," says Claringlon trustee Nancy Coffin, who chaired the committee, which has met a number of times to look at the situation since it was set up last fall. "But when we look at what's good for kids, and program- wise, there was no choice. "With the new funding model, we can't continue to keep a school open that houses less than 50 students," students," she says. 'Die Ministry of Education Education rates the school as having having a capacity of more dian 120 students, which means Mitchell's Corners, which houses students from Grade 1 through 6, is currently less dian half full. The school's enrolment is expected to drop even further over the , next five years, according to board projections. Under the Province's funding formula, having excess excess capacity at one school can hamper the board's ability ability to access funds to build another elsewhere. Closing the school will result new pupil place funding of $134,750, says a staff report. The committee has also made a number of recommendations recommendations on where the displaced students from Mitchell's Comers would attend attend schbol after the closure. The public input session will be held at Zion United Church, on Enfield Road north of Taunton Road, on Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Anyone who wishes to make presentations at that meeting is asked to call Linda Scott at 1-877-741- 4577, ext. 2006.
