PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 9,2001 Pro lacrosse league could lure top players from Brooklin Redmen U.S field lacrosse league rumoured to be offering players between $10,000 and $20,000 BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer DURHAM - A new field lacrosse league operating in the United States this summer could drastically alter the look of the Brooklin Redmen and other box lacrosse teams in Canada. Gavin Front and Steve Toll, key players in the Rcdmcn's Mann Cup national championship team last year, arc potential players in the new Major League Lacrosse, which is set to begin play with six teams in June. Rumoured to be offering players between $ 10,000 and $20,000 for a 14-game season, MLL may insist its players not play for any other teams during the summer, which would have a profound effect on the Ontario Lacrosse Association. The trouble is, according to OLA executive director Stan Cock- erton, MLL has conducted its business business with extreme secrecy to date. "Honestly I don't think anybody knows at this point," says Cocker- ton, who hopes things will be cleared up at international lacrosse meetings in May. "The new league is being very silent on their plans right now." Cockerton says he has heard rumours rumours that contracts being signed are prohibiting players from playing playing elsewhere during the course of the MLL's schedule. If true, the OLA could lose such premier players as John Grant Jr. and John Tavares, the top two scorers scorers in the Major Series last season, who were both drafted by the Rochester Rattlers. Toll was also drafted by the Rattlers, Rattlers, in the first round of a supplemental supplemental draft, while Prout is sure to be snapped up once his college eligibility eligibility is up. Baltimore, Boston, Bridgeport, New Jersey and Long Island are the other MLL teams. "There's a lot of ifs, ands or buts right now," says Prout, a senior at Baltimore's Loyola College and one of the top field lacrosse players in the NCAA. "If I'm eligible, I'd definitely look forward to (playing in the MLL)." Prout, 23, says he will learn soon from the NCAA if he has another year of college eligibility, but estimates estimates only a 20 per cent chance of being back with Loyola. If, indeed, his college eligibility is up, he is likely to be a top draft choice in the MLL, which would leave his status with the Redmen in doubt. Even if the MLL relents and allows allows players to play elsewhere, Prout might not be able to commit to the Redmen depending on travel and his employment status for the summer. "It's definitely a time of choices," choices," says Prout, the OLA's rookie- of-the-year and the Redmen's leading leading playoff scorer last season. Toll, 26, is confident he could play for both the Redmen and the Rattlers and hopes the lacrosse associations associations sort things out to make it possible. "If they said I couldn't play for the Redmen, then I'd have a difficult difficult decision to make," says Toll, who is currently seeking a third straight National Lacrosse League championship with the Toronto Rock. To further complicate matters, Canada will soon be holding tryouts tryouts for the 2002 field lacrosse world championships. Toll, who won a silver medal with Canada in 1998, looks at the MLL as a chance to hone his field skills prior to returning to the worlds. But those playing in the MLL in 2002 may have difficulty being excused excused for the championships, which will be held in Australia. "Even though you'd love to play for your national team, you also have to pay for it," says Prout, a Got a good idea for a sports story?
