( PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 23,2001 Football foes now on same team Local gridiron products members of Winnipeg Blue Bombers BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer DURHAM - Dave Mudge and Wayne Weathers have gone from football foes to brothers-in-arms over the past decade. The two local gridiron products, Mudge a former Henry Street student student and Weathers a G.L. Roberts grad, both re-signed with the Winnipeg Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Canadian Football League. Of the two, Mudge apparently has the better memory. When he joined the Bombers from the Toronto Argonauts last season, Mudge had to refresh Weathers on their high school playing playing days, recalling a futile attempt to chase Weathers down while playing playing defence for Roberts. As much as things have changed 10 years later, they've stayed the same. They still go toe-to-toe on the football field, but now it's on the practice field with Mudge on offence offence and Weathers on defence as they work toward a common goal - winning a Grey Cup. "You win some, you lose some," Weathers says of their practice battles, battles, which are left on the field. "It's good to have somebody with the same experience from the same area on the team." Mudge, who says the two also played together for a time in the Oshawa Hawkeyes system, was glad to see a familiar face when he first joined the team. "It was nice when I first came in because immediately you know at least one guy," says, Mudge. "It's good io Have"d'"gùy" around from your old neighbourhood." The two have taken different paths to the Bombers. Mudge, a 6-foot-7, 305-pound offensive lineman, graduated from Michigan State, played a season with Amsterdam in the NFL Europe, Europe, and was cut by the Buffalo Bills before landing with the Argos, who then traded him to Winnipeg. Weathers, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound linebacker and special teams player, player, played for the University of Manitoba Bisons before getting drafted by the Bombers, where he has spent the past four seasons. Mudge, 26, should have a better line on a starting job when the season season gets under way in July. He started all 18 regular season games and both playoff dates a year ago, when Winnipeg bowed out in the East Conference final, 35-24 to Montreal. Weathers, who will turn 28 before before the start of the season, was slowed by a dislocated ankle and didn't have the breakthrough campaign campaign he was expecting. He is in Winnipeg training about two hours a day as he works toward a starting job this season. "This is my fourth year here. At this point, I think this is the year for me to step up," says Weathers. "I've seen a lot of people come and go over the past four years, so I'm happy to still be here." Weathers, who hurt his ankle playing basketball, is also an elite wrestler who may have represented Canada at the Sydney Olympics had he not been injured. "I think I'm done as far as wrestling is concerned," says Weathers, leaving a small window open for the next Olympics in 2004. "It's too hard to play football and try to pick up wrestling after the season." The now defunct XFL was never a serious consideration for either Weathers or Mudge. The league last only one season, and recently announced announced it would not return for a second. Both arc keeping busy in Winnipeg, Winnipeg, Weathers rehabilitating his ankle and Mudge working in commercial commercial real estate. Following the Blue Bombers' season-opener July 4, Weathers and especially Mudge will have a homecoming of sorts when they lace the Argos in Toronto on July 13. "It's fun," Mudge says of facing his old team. "You have a lot of friends and family in the stands and you get to sec some of the guys you played with. I'll have a lot of fun playing Toronto."
