\ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 13,2001 PAGE A11 Our saviours Durham's emergency response teams receive accolades for saving lives BY CRYSTAL CRM I Special to Tliix Week OSIIAWA - For Don King of Os- liawa, emergency response in Durham isn't just good, it's the best and the reason lie's alive today. On March 20, Mr. King woke up around 4 a.m. with chest and arm pains and even though he knew lie could be having a heart attack, he sat in denial until the pain was too great and his time had almost run out. "I phoned 911 and they were there immediately," said his wife, Wilma. "If they hadn't been, he wouldn't be here today." At the Lightning Bolt Awards on Friday, Mr. King got to thank his saviours by presenting them with a special lightning bolt pin and certificate certificate along with others who owe their lives to the region's emergency response response teams. The ceremony at Parkwood Carriage Carriage House, located next to Lak- cridge Health Oshawa, was filled with firefighters, communicators and paramedics to give people the chance to thank the teams who saved their lives. "These (people who's lives were saved) are all people who have suffered suffered cardiac arrest where their heart stopped beating," said David Mokcdanz, clinic co-ordinator with the Base Hospital Program. He said it is very important for people to get closure by thanking the emergency response teams. The ceremony helped them do that. The lightning bolt pin presented represents the defibrillation process (electric shocks) that starts the heart's natural pacemaker back up and gets the heart beating again'. All emergency response teams from Claringlon to Pickering have the defibrillation defibrillation device on board with them. "We want to keep encouraging the community to move toward early xle.fi bri Hationsaid Mr,. Mokcdanz. He said many public places like malls and community centres already already have access to the re-fibrillation re-fibrillation devices that exists around el us fend ng (7 There arc times when we all need help... because wc arc ill, have small children or aging parents with special needs. Mr. King said local councils should stop criticizing the emergency emergency response teams and offer them more financial support instead of counting all their nickels and dimes. "Everybody figures it happens to someone else," said Mr. King. "They don't realize the same thing that happened to me can happen to them... we need more funding for these things; don't wait until it hap pens to you because it (emergency response) might not be there." Mr. King said he owes his life to all the paramedics: Paul Robinson and Rodger Sharpe, the firefighters: Paul Moffat, Kevin Dickinson, Can- dice Hollingshead and Jamie Taylor, and the communicators: Warren Wright and Paul Mitchell, and everyone else involved in the emergency emergency response teams. For him, it was an honour to have been able to thank them in person. Port hope Festival Theatre presents 66 Baby Makes Two Bank of Montreal A New Canadian Play by Corrine Hurley.
