THE CANADIAN STATESMAN. JUNE 13.2001 PAGE B1 Home not so sweet for Green Gaels Jr. B lacrosse team has a better record on the road than at home BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor You won't see the Clarington Green Gaels erecting any 'Home Sweet Home' signs around the Garnet Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex any time soon.- While the building serves as the home floor for the Jr. B lacrosse club, it hasn't exactly provided much of an advantage this season. In six games, Clarington is a mediocre 3-3 at home. It's on the road where the team has been dominant, dominant, posting a 5-1 mark including an 11-3 win in Huntsville on Saturday Saturday night. The lack of success at home is a cause for concern right now, considering considering the team plays its next two games in Barrie on Thursday and Mimico Friday. But four of the last six games of the season are at home and may go a long way in determin ing home floor advantage in the playoffs. "I think it is our youth," said general general manager Doug Lucy of the team's inability to make use of home floor advantage. "The players play loose on the road and we arc always flat at home." Noting that the team is going to have to change its pre-game approach approach to try and "shake things up a little bit," Lucy says much of the problem stems from the team not playing a full 60-minute game. In particular has been a less than stellar opening period. Despite the lopsided win in Huntsville on Saturday, the Green Gaels again got off to a slow start, leading 2-1 after the first period. "It was the same old story," said Luey. "It was embarrassing to only be up 2-1 after the first period." Tyler Harris led the way in the win with a goal and five assists, while Paul O'Grady and Dave Werry added two goals apiece. James Barton, Andy Glen, Casey Logeman, Jim Mumford, Chris Bade and Mark Unwin had the other goals. The Green Gaels have a record of 3-3 on its home floor at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, but are 5-] on the road. The game was a rough affair with the Green Gaels receiving 70 minutes minutes in penalties to Huntsville's 51. Aaron Lowes, Ryan Preston, Cody Derks and Barton were all ejected in the third period for fighting. The win improved the Green Gaels' record to 8-4, helping to maintain its three-point lead over second-place Scarborough in the Far East Division. Aside from last year's league finalists finalists from Elora, every other team in the league has suffered at least one loss. That may be another reason why the Green Gaels aren't dominating on its home floor, adds Luey. "All the leagues have parity. Different Different teams are knocking each other off all the time." The Green Gaels don't have another another home game until Tuesday, June 19 when it hosts Barrie in a rescheduled game from May when referees failed to show up. Game time is 8 p.m. Gens ' coach off to Czech Republic with U-18 team BY BRIAN LEGREE : - Staff Editor- - OSHAWA - George Burnett'believes Burnett'believes it's an ideal way for him to rejoin rejoin the Canadian hockey program without compromising his job of rebuilding rebuilding the Oshawa Generals. Burnett, the coach and general manager of the Generals, has been named head coach of Canada's under-18 summer team, which will compete in the Six Nations Tournament Tournament in the Czech Republic in August. August. "It's an opportunity to be involved involved in the summer and doesn't work against my time with the Gen erals," says Burnett. "We're really well-organized and it won't take away from my duties here." This marks Burnett's second tour of duty with the national program. The Port Perry native was head coach of the national junior team briefly in 1998 before accepting an assistant coaching position with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks qf the National National Hockey League. Thirty-four hopefuls will gather for a training camp in Toronto Aug. 1 and 22 players will make the trip to the Czech Republic for the five- game round-robin tournament, which runs Aug. 13-19. Barry Trapp, head of scouting for the Canadian TIockcy Association,- will identify the 34 invitees to the camp. Most of the players invited likely took part in last year's world under-17 event in the Maritimes, notes Burnett. Three members of the Generals - Ben Eager and Paul Ranger with Team Ontario and Josh Manning with Team Atlantic, were invited to take part last season, although Ranger was injured and didn't play. "Whether they're invited is not really in my hands," says Burnett. Coaching the under-18 team will allow Burnett to get "re-acquainted with Canadian hockey," he says. ' Former Generals' coach Stan Butler Butler will once again coach the national national junior team.
