PAGE A8THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 13,2001 Forty years and counting Bowmanville Museum has changed dramatically since it opened its doors to visitors in 1961 BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - From a pioneer pioneer crafts museum, lo a "period home reflecting the lifestyle" of" the family that had lived in it, Bowmanville Museum Museum has changed dramatically since it first opened its doors 40 years ago. "Sometimes you don't think it's changed at all," says Charles Taws, the museum's curator for more than a decade. "But you look at the scrapbooks scrapbooks and it has changed" The museum, located at 37 Silver Sl„ opened its doors in 1961, not one moment too soon for the Bowmanville woman who donated $50,000 for the town to open a museum. Sarah Jane Williams "and her husband had been agitating since the 1930s for a museum" museum" in town, says Mr. Taws. In 1959, Mrs. Williams, the widow of Dr. L.B. Williams, told the Town of Bowmanville that she would donate the money to establish the museum, and gave the town only a two-year option within which to accept the gift. In late 1960, the Jury family home, located on Silver Street in Bowmanville, was purchased purchased at a price of $25,000; $5,000 was set aside to start the museum and the rest was invested, says Mr. Taws. "The museum actually started out more in terms of a pioneer crafts museum," museum," says the curator, noting the back of what is now the building's parlour was set up as a general store. "But, the purpose of the museum has changed dramatically. It's now a period home reflecting reflecting the lifestyle of the Jurys." The change happened about 15 years ago, when museum officials "felt it was more in keeping with the outside of the house" to make it into a family period home, notes Mr. Taws, adding, in recent years, "virtually every part of the museum has been re-done, the grounds have been improved vastly, and the doll collection has been improved." improved." Now, there's only one problem, problem, says the, curator., s , . ... fi I %tWe'vè.rtjm li SâtMbf'ipabé:'i i have no'-- ispace ' wharstiever^'The says! v 'Many" " pieces of memorabilia are currently in boxes in a town-owned building in Hampton, but still, "the museum itself is becoming very overcrowded." And that's something Mr. Taws would like to do something about. "We have had an expansion plan on the books since 1980," he says. And with Bowmanville's library branch, situated on the back end of the current museum's museum's grounds, slated to move to a new location within the next couple of years, Mr. Taws can't help but look at the nearby building as a potential future addition addition for the museum. Of course, he notes, that's "all up to (municipal) council," who will make the final decision decision on what happens to the current Temperance Street library site. Mr. Taws has even figured out how the library library building could fit into the grand scheme of the museum. "The library would be somewhat like the main entrance, then (visitors) would come see the house," the curator envisions.
