The most impressive was his first- place finish at the Royal Canadian Legion Legion finals held in Quebec recently, where he took first place in his division division with a leap of 2.10m. The winning jump was just a fraction under his per sonal best of 2.1 lm. in competition. Even more promising, in training sessions he was clearing the bar at 2.17m. "A month ago I would have thought that jumping 2.17 or 2.20 was crazy. Now it's not so far out of reach," says the 16-year-old Bowmanvillc resident. At the biggest meet of the summer last month, Dillon finished 11th, failing failing to advance to the finals at the World Youth championships. His best jump at the meet was 1.95m. ■ "I didn't jump well at all," he says of the international experience. "1 knew everyone else was jumping higher higher and that I wasn't going to win. I just couldn't jump high enough." More than 1,300 athletes from 166 countries converged on Hungary for the World Youth championships. Dillon Dillon says he was thankful for the financial financial support from the community that enabled him to compete. A little closer to home, at the Junior Nationals in Calgary, Dillon collected the silver medal at the meet held July 27-29. His best jump was 2.05 in windy conditions. "As a high jumper the wind can really really mess you up, but I tried not to let it bother me." His effort at the Junior Nationals automatically qualified him for the Junior Junior Pan Am Games in Argentina in October. He turned down the invitation, invitation, however, citing a number of "personal "personal reasons" for his decision. After a hectic couple of months, he will be taking a little time off before resuming training in September for the indoor season. MARK DILLON 'Jekyll and Hyde' Cobras reach provincials BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor COURTICE - This weekend's weekend's All-Ontario baseball championships for major mosquito mosquito select teams is a tournament tournament format, which suits thé Clarington Cobras just fine. In regular season games this season, the team had a hard time winning. But in tournaments, the team was undefeated. The Cobras hope that undefeated undefeated string continues, resulting resulting in a provincial championship championship this weekend in Mississauga. Mississauga. "They just don't believe they can be beat. They go in with that attitude," says coach Bill van Boxtel of his G&G Fab & Tool team of 11-year-olds. The fact the team advanced to the provincial championships is quite an accomplishment. In league play the team struggled to a disappointing 2-10 record. In tournaments, it was the exact opposite. The Cobras were champions of tournaments in Orillia and Barrie, resulting in a perfect record of 7-0. It was those two tournament championships that qualified Clarington for provincials. "It's like Jekyll and Hyde," the way the team played in regular regular season games as opposed to tournaments, says van Boxtel. "The team was put together two weeks before the season started, but the kids have soaked everything in. We tell them something and they go out and do it. "If you saw them from the beginning to now; I just wish I could do the season all over again." The coach credits the work of his assistants, Gary Brown and Pierre Couture with helping turn the fortunes of the team around. van Boxtel says the team is a close-knit group, adding that players get together on their own for informal practices. The chemistry is just like a big group of "brothers," he adds. Clarington will open the double-knockout tournament on Friday night, hoping to put enough wins together to reach the finals of the 12-team tournament. tournament. r i i i i i i i i i i i i i i i i BROKEN WINDSHIELD?
