) THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 29,2001 PAGE 17 Redmen bounced from playoffs Defending Canadian champions eliminated by Brampton BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer ■ BRAMPTON - So much for a dynasty. When the Brooklin Redmen finally finally got the monkey off their back and beat the Brampton Excelsiors en route to winning the Mann Cup last year, there was talk of many more to come. After all, the team was young and now armed with the knowledge of what it took to win. But a funny thing happened on the way to British Columbia, where the Redmen fully expected to go to defend their national championship in September - a determined Brampton squad bounced back and retook the Ontario Lacrosse Association Association Major Series crown. The Excelsiors wrapped the series series up in six games with an 11-9 win at home Sunday, their third straight victory after falling behind 2-1 to the favoured Redmen. "They outworked us," Redmen ;co-coach Elmer Tran stated simply. "I don't know why our intensity level wasn't as high as theirs. We just didn't have that killer instinct." Indeed, the Redmen had several chances to bury the Excelsiors in the series. After cruising to an 18-8 win in the opener, Brooklin led 7-4 in Game 2 but fell apart and dropped a 13-9 decision. Then, after winning 13-9 at home, the Redmen let a third-period lead disappear disappear in Brampton, where they lost 8-7. With renewed confidence, the Excelsiors did what they had to do by stealing a game in Whitby Friday, Friday, prevailing 10-8 at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, before finishing things off at home Sunday. "Last year we found ways of winning; this year we found ways of losing," said Tran, who watched his club cough up a 4-1 lead Sunday. Sunday. "I give (the Excelsiors) full credit because they outworked us. That's what it's all about." The Redmen certainly had their moments in the series, many of them provided by captain Shawn Williams. On Sunday, he finished off a remarkable remarkable playoff run by scoring a natural hat trick in a six-minute span of the third period, bringing the Redmen back from a 10-6 deficit to within one with four minutes minutes remaining. Williams had 30 goals and 59 points in 11 playoff games. "It doesn't mean anything," Williams said of his eye-popping numbers. "Obviously personal stuff is good in hindsight... but the bottom bottom line is getting on that plane and heading west to defend the title." Steve Toll led the Redmen Sunday Sunday with five points, including two goals, while Mike McLellan, Shay- don Santos, Peter Lough and Brad MacArthur each scored once. Gee Nash started in goal, but was relieved in the third period by Peewee Orioles split final two games The Clarington Oriole peewee baseball baseball team, sponsored by Maguire Water Supply, completed regular season season play with a win and loss. At home against Ennsimore, the Orioles scored six runs in its final at bat to squeak out a 7-5 victory. A key two-run double by Justin Ruf knocked in the winning runs. Kyle Sasnowski also contributed three RBI for the victors along with a pair by Jordan Holmes. Jake Maguire and Chad Walsh collected a pair of hits each with one to Mark Stata. Stata also pitched the complete game victory, giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out seven in the process. In the season finale, the Oriole bats could only muster five hits in a 4-1 loss to Oshawa. Stata gain led the team with a pair of hits to go along with a strong relief pitching effort, giving up one run on six hits and striking out seven in pitching the final five innings. Pete Downs started for the Orioles giving up three unearned runs in the first inning inning to take the loss. Downs also contributed contributed with a hit as did Maguire and Trevor Smith. Ollier team members arc Dan Jack- son, Mike Lusty, Brandon Bailey and Chris Cleland. Rob Blasdell, who sparked the comeback bid by setting setting up two goals and holding the Excelsiors off the board until an empty- netter with 39 seconds remaining. remaining. "To me we didn't play up to our potential," said Tran. "Maybe it's the coaches' fault. Maybe we didn't motivate them enough. But we don't run the floor for them." To be fair, the Redmen did lose some key players this season, most notably sniper Gavin Prout to the Major League Lacrosse loop and defensive stalwart stalwart Glenn Clark to the Coquitlam Adanacs. And, when Scott Mac- Doncll went down for the series with a knee injury in Game 1, the Redmen lost a loose ball specialist who Tran believes may have made the difference. But all teams must deal with defections - Brampton Brampton lost heart-and-souler Jim Veltman this season - and injuries, so the Red- men weren't in the mood for excuses. "We've got to give Brampton credit," Tran said. "They adjusted and- they really played hard." "They just had. more hunger," Williams added. "You could sec it in their eyes that they wanted it that little bit more."
