Port Granby news is old news: Mayor BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Toxic waste - including uranium, arsenic arsenic and cadmium - is being discharged into Lake Ontario from a Ciarington site housing low-level radioactive waste, says a report issued this week by a Toronto-based lake watchdog watchdog group. But Clarington's mayor says the situation at the Port Granby site has long been less than ideal, and that a plan to contain the waste, which currently sits in the ground south of Lakcshorc Road along Lake Ontario, is already in its beginning beginning stages. "It's been a problem for years down there, and we know right now that what's there is not suitable," says Mayor John Mutton of the site. This week's report, authored by the Lake Ontario Keeper (LOK) organization, is spawn of a three-year study by the watchdog group, says LOK's Mark Mattson. Mr. Mattson, who has toured the area several times by boat, says he "got sick of looking at it (waste) leaking into.the lake." But Jim Lcveque, spokesman for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, which regulates the site, says sampling at the site is carried out weekly, and quarterly reports reports arc issued. "The results of monitoring that we have on Port Granby... show contamination levels arc well below regulatory limits,"-he says. The LOK report includes information information from both independent independent studies and government sources, says Mr. Mattson. "I wish they would have come forward a few years ago, when we really needed a push with the federal government," says Mayor Mutton. But an agreement recently signed by Ciarington, Port Hope and Hope, and the federal government government has set the wheels in motion motion to begin the $260 million clean-up and containment of the waste.
