i I THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 19,2001 PAGE 17 Gens open with 4-2 win over St. Mike's BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor OSIIAWA - Things couldn't have gone much better for the Oshawa Generals Generals in their Ontario Hockey League opener. Not only did a decent- sized crowd of 2,960 show up at the Civic Auditorium, but the Generals scored on their first two shots and took advantage of an understaffed St. Michael's Majors team to score a 4-2 win Sunday. "You're looking at a team that I think is probably the best team in the (Eastern) Conference," said Oshawa coach and general manager George Burnett, referring to the Majors. "We understand they're shorthanded, but we play them four times and that's a win for us and we weren't able to beat them last year. (But) I'm not as concerned about anyone elsc's lineup as I am with us getting the job done." St. Mike's played without their top two netminders, Peter Budaj (Colorado) and Andy Chiodo (New York Islanders), Islanders), along with defencemen defencemen Mark Popovic (Anaheim), (Anaheim), Drew Fata (Pittsburgh) (Pittsburgh) and forward Darryl Boolland (Colorado), who arc at NHL training camps. Still, the Generals have to be pleased to win their first game of the season, given the club went nine games without without a victory at the start of last season. "I think last year is last year," says Burnett, who has talked openly about his team's need to get off to a fast start this season. "We believe believe we're better, whether it's an ugly win or however we term it, it is a win and it's fun to come to practice knowing we've got a win behind behind us. It's a good start anyway anyway we look at it." Chris Minard, Scott Rozcndal, Mike Rice and Jamie Johnson scored for the Generals. The Generals now play seven of their next nine games on the road, including games Friday in Sault Ste. Marie and Sunday in Sud- buiy. Oshawa plays in Ottawa Ottawa on Friday, Sept. 28 before before returning to the Civic on Sunday, Sept. 30 (6:35 p.m.) to face Sudbury.
