'Justice' served as Eagles salvage tie Colin Baker's goal with 11 seconds left results in 2-2 tie with Cobourg BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor BOWMANVILLE - While the gap between the top teams and those at the bottom of the East Conference is beginning beginning to widen, the Bowmanville Eagles are starting to show signs they are a team that can compete in the upper tier. In their past two home games, the Eagles have proven they can play with the elite teams, gaining ties against Wellington last week and coming up with a late rally for a 2-2 stalemate against Cobourg on Sunday at the Garnet Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. After Cobourg narrowly missed stuffing the puck into an empty Eagles' net after goaltender Darryl Bouchard was pulled in the final minute of the third period, Colin Baker broke down the ice and scored after crashing into Cobourg goaltender Ryan Gibb with 11 seconds left in regulation time. Neither team was able to pull out the win in a five-minute overtime. "It was justice that we got a break with 11 seconds left to tie the game because because we deserved a point for the way we played over the final 40 minutes," said coach and general manager Curtis Hodgins. The turnaround was significant considering considering the Eagles were badly outplayed outplayed in the first period, resulting in a 2-0 advantage for Cobourg on a pair of Brock Yates goals, one on the power play. After "unloading" on his players in the intermission, Hodgins said his team responded in a favourable fashion. "I don't think we could have been any worse in the first period. It was just chaos out there. We were fortunate to come out of that period only down two goals." Leading scorer Jon Ross scored for Bowmanville midway through the second second period to cut the margin to one, setting setting up the dramatic finish in the final seconds. Cobourg thought they had sealed the game with a goal with 1:18 left in the third period to go up 3-1, but referee Brent Thompson mled the net had become become dislodged before the puck crossed the line. The tie improved Bowmanville's record to S-6-2-2 on the season, leaving the team in sixth place in the East Conference Conference of the Provincial Junior Hockey League. More importantly, it showed that the Eagles can compete with the top teams, particularly on home ice where the team sports a 5-2-2-0 mark. "We haven't been blown out of any games yet and we're playing the top teams tough." said Hodgins. "The ceiling ceiling is pretty high here and I think we can improve when we get evciybody back. "We've tied two of the top teams back-to-back (on home ice) and we'll take that at this point in the year." A pair of tests arc looming this weekend with a game in Wellington Friday Friday night followed by a home game Sunday against Peterborough at 6:30 p.m. THE SCOOP - The Eagles used Steve Cornellisen, Jason Speight and Matt Savoie from the Toro major ban tam team in Sunday's game.
