Familiar faces on Warriors : lacrosse coaching staff Bob Hanna steps down as coach, remains as GM; Jeff McComb takes over as ' bench boss BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer WHITBY - Familiarity won't be a problem for the new head coach of the Whitby Warriors. Warriors. Jeff McComb, who spent six years as an assistant with the Junior Junior A lacrosse club before guiding guiding Whitby's midget team to a provincial championship last season, will replace Bob Hanna as bench boss of the Warriors next season. Hanna, who has stepped down as head coach but will stay on as general manager, says McComb McComb is "the logical guy to take over." An assistant under Hanna for two seasons and the legendary Jim Bishop for four seasons prior to that, McComb knows both the program and its players well. "It's an exciting opportunity," says McComb, who was reluctant reluctant to leave the midget team after such a successful first season season as head coach. "It was a difficult difficult decision because it was ,. shchAgrpatigroup ofikidsj.. I.fig- uredjin the long run,;I'd have'an opportunity to be a Jr. A coach for a long time." McComb, a 32-year-old Os- hawa resident, will be joined behind behind the bench by assistants Marty Gallas and Terry Lloyd, keeping together a staff that led local midget teams to provincial box and national field lacrosse championships this past season. McComb and Gallas are both former players and assistant coaches with the Warriors while Lloyd is best known for his work with the Oshawa Blue Knights field lacrosse program. "I think we have a pretty good group in place," Hanna says of the new staff. "To me, it was a natural move." Hanna took over the coaching job when Bishop died in a car accident accident prior to the 1999 season and led the team to a Minto Cup national championship. The victory victory was a touching dedication to Bishop, who guided the team to a Minto Cup two years earlier. But the Warriors have faltered somewhat since and were swept in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Association semifinals by St. Catharines this past season. j. ,.jTaking on a.iteam that ^will lose seven overage players, including including stalwarts A.J. Shannon and Wes Suddoiis, McComb says the Warriors will nevertheless nevertheless be in the mix again next season. season. • "I think it certainly has the potential to be a contender," says McComb. "With the number of kids playing minor lacrosse, we should always be right up there." More importantly, McComb says he hopes to uphold the values values instilled in the program by such predecessors as Bishop. "You always end up measuring measuring yourself, at least a little bit, against someone like 'Bish'," he says. "You're not always going to be able to win eveiy year, but you can certainly play with class and discipline every year." The annual general meeting for the Warriors will be held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Heydenshore Pavilion. Pavilion. The public is welcome to attend. attend.
