THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 9,2002 PAGE 15 Eagles looking to make a deal at trade deadline Il y URAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE Somewhere in the background, background, the theme music played during Final Jeopardy ! is emanating throughout the ; offices of teams in the Provincial Provincial Junior A Hockey League. That's because the league's trade deadline is Thursday at midnight, and right to the final hour, teams will be making making decisions about the best way to improve for the play- ■ offs or unload talent in hopes ! of rebuilding for next season. The Bowmanville Eagles fall somewhere in between. Coach and general manag- ' cr Curtis Hodgins says the team is talking trade, but is ; dealing from a difficult position. position. Although the hockey club would like to improve ■ for the playoffs, there aren't a ! whole lot of highly skilled, : impact players looking to rc- ; locate to a sixth place team. 1 Pulling the trigger on a ! trade is a difficult process, he ! says. "You have to make the deal ; with the other teams and then 1 convince the players to report. You've got kids going to ! school and working," says ; Hodgins of the variables in- ' volved. CURTIS HODGINS 'Hopefully we can pull off a couple deals by Thursday.' "It's not easy, but hopefully hopefully we can pull off a couple deals by Thursday." In a minor move, the Eagles Eagles acquired defenceman Robert Eberlc from the Os- ha wa Legionaires in a cash deal over the weekend. Bolstering the blue-line is one of the areas Hodgins would like to improve through a trade. "We're looking to add, but there isn't a lot out there. Everybody's looking for defencemen defencemen and we're certainly looking to shore that up and get a little bigger back there," says Hodgins. "Up front we need a little more depth. "We're looking and talking to everybody, but it's the same as every deadline. Everyone's talking but who knows if anything anything will get done?" Further complicating matters matters for the Eagles is the attempt attempt to add players without trading anyone from the roster, roster, a strategy Hodgins used to acquire Eberle. But as the deadline looms, lie has softened his stance in an attempt to make the team better. "We want to be pretty loyal to our players, but it may come down to having to move one of our players in order to improve the hockey club," says Hodgins. Last season the Eagles were one of the busiest clubs in the league at the trade deadline, sending four of then- top players to new locations. Forwards Seth Gray and Ken Chesher went to Lindsay, goaltendcr Rick Marnon was dealt to Markham and forward forward Brad Foote was traded to Cobourg. 'O £ £ ■A On &.
