4 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JANUARY 30, 2002 PAGE 5 U.S. could rejoin fusion effort after originally pulling out U.S. from pane I The slow progress of ITER was compounded by the agenda of the Republican-dominated Republican-dominated congress of the day to cut spending, adds Mr. Dean. It was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time for ITER. "Fusion seemed like one of these projects that wasn't going to amount to anything," he says. Since then, the international partners have rescaled the project to a more modest $12-billion facility and made significant progress toward the final site selection, expected to be made in mid- 2002. "The first indication congress may Ire open to re-entering the process was a letter from the new science committee chairman of the House of Representatives," Representatives," says Mr. Dean. In a November letter to the US Energy Energy Secretary, the chairman of the science science committee. Sherwood Bochlert. urged the secretary to send a representative representative to the international discussions. "The current ITER proposal merits consideration," he wrote. "It is a far cry from the original ITER program, which collapsed under the weight of its projected projected cost despite international interest... interest... "While we arc not ready to offer our unqualified support for this initiative we do believe exploring the current ITER option makes sense." Good news also arrived in Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham's response in January. Though he didn't agree to send a representative to the negotiations just yet. he did confirm the energy department department and the US fusion community have been "following closely the progress by the ITER parties in developing developing a more attractive, lower cost design design for the proposed facility and most recently the movements toward concrete concrete site proposals and detailed preparations preparations to begin construction." The department's department's initial review should be completed completed in the next few months, he wrote. ITER Canada had hoped for a quicker quicker decision, admits Dr. Barnard. "We want to get the United States involved in time for them to be part of the discussions," discussions," on site selection, he says. Hopefully, Hopefully, a decision will be made in time for that to happen, he says. With Japan and the European Union both interested in presenting a host site, that leaves only Russia as a neutral party, he points out. Having the United States back in negotiations negotiations could help speed up the process and make the launch of the project a reality reality that much sooner. But world events may be playing a part in the delay, says Mr. Dean, who notes the California energy crisis last year brought fusion research to the forefront. forefront. Unfortunately, he adds, with the tragic events of Sept. 11. it was relegated relegated to "the back burner. "After Sept. 11 the whole focus has been anti-terrorism and all the money available and some that's not has been going to the defence program." Still, he adds, the government will need to address its energy bill this year. Both Dr. Barnard and Mr. Dean suggest suggest while the United States fusion community support the ideals of ITER, there is some concern their own budgets could be cut if the United States rejoins ITER. Future of bridge in doubt Andrew Kozak (left) and Jack Syer are hoping to save the wooden bridge on Prospect Street. FUTURE from pane I in all likelihood it wouldn't be timber. That's not practical. We probably wouldn't use concrete either. It would probably by a prefabricated steel structure." structure." Clarington director of engineering Tony Cannclla says the municipality is just concluding traffic studies in the area. He emphasizes no decision has been made and "all options" will be considered. considered. Mr. Cannclla suggests there arc many possibilities to be considered as well as the cost impact of any decision. The Feb. 7 meeting will be held at the Clarington Municipal Centre, 40 Temperance Temperance St., Bowmanvillc beginning at 6:30 p.m. Any residents who would like to add their names to the petition to save the wooden bridge are invited to call Mr. Kozak at 905-697-2985. "I think it takes time to see the re sults we want to - you don't see those improvements right away for the next year. "Obviously we're not where we want to be, but the process is good and it gives staff a measuring tool to where we want to be," she added. School results for Grade 3 and 6 provincewide testing.
