Coach and general manager Curtis Hodgins didn't even have to take time to think about when that moment moment occurred in the series between the Bowmanville Eagles and Cobourg Cougars. It came immediately following an on-ice altercation in the third period of Game 3 that resulted in the ejection of six players. Thp Eagles, leading I -0 at the time, were, granted .a scvep-minntc power play,' but failed to score to pad the lead and the momentum shifted in Cobourg's favour. A goal with five minutes left to tie arid the winner with 28 seconds remaining remaining in the game gave Cobourg the win and a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Provincial Junior A East Conference quarterfinal series. "We had to score there," said Hod- gins in retrospect. Cobourg completed the sweep of the best-of-seven series Sunday night with a 3-2 double-over- time victory. "We were up DO and we had to score. They got momentum from killing off the penalties, came back and eventually won. "Game 3 was pivotal. That was the backbreaker. We couldn't put them away and it came back to bite us." Captain Jon Ross, standing outside the dressing room following Game 4, looked back on that moment as the turning point as well. "That look the wind out of our sails," he agreed. Hodgins added that a productive power play could alter the result of a playoff series. In this case, the lack of success with the man advantage altered altered the series in a negative manner. "A goal here or there on the power play is such a huge momentum swing," he said. On the flip side, killing of penalties provides as boost, , as ilJustratecLby Cobourg.. Based on the final results of the regular season, the Eagles, despite being swept, were competitive. Cobourg finished second in the East Conference, 30 points ahead of the seventh-place Eagles. During six'regular six'regular season head-to-head games, Cobourg won four times while the other two games ended in a tie. Without the use of a calculator, in 10 games including playoffs, Cobourg posted an 8-0-2 record against the Eagles. Eagles. Yet, the four games in the series were all close, two decided in the final 30 seconds and another in overtime. "We persevered all season and we gave it our all. We pushed Cobourg to the limit," said goaltender Darryl Bouchard, who started all four games in the series. Eagles swept by Cobourg Goal in double overtime ends series BY BRAD KELLY Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE- The Bowmanville Eagles managed managed to extend their Provincial Provincial Junior A East Conference Conference quarterfinal series with the Cobourg Cougars, but not in the manner they would have liked to. Trailing 3-0 in the best- of-seven series, the Eagles were hoping to extend the scries scries with a victory Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. Complex. While they managed to extend the game beyond regulation regulation time, they couldn't prolong the series. Kerry Bowman jammed in a rebound 12:19 into the second overtime period to give Cobourg a 3-2 victory and a four-game sweep of the series. "We had six or seven good, quality chances and I dori't know how a couple of them didn't go in," said coach and general manager Curtis Hodgins about the exchange exchange of scoring chances in overtime. "You get a little worried when they don't go in because you know sooner or later (Cobourg's) going to score and sure enough they did." It was the third time in the series that Cobourg pulled out a win with a goal in dramatic dramatic fashion. In the series opener Cobourg scored with four seconds left in the game to win 4-3, and in Game 3, scored twice in the final five minutes, the winner with 28 seconds left, to pull out a 2-1 win. Sunday's overtime goal followed the pattern. "We're devastated right now," said captain Jon Ross. "We thought we could have gone further than this. "We gave it all we had. We battled hard the whole series. Each game could have gone either way. We didn't get the bounces and that was the difference. It certainly wasn't a lack of work ethic." It was Bowmanville that managed a comeback this time out, trailing 2-0 late into the third period after Cobourg's Matt Simmons scored in the first period and Brock Yates added a power- play goal in the second. The goal by Simmons came just 1:14 into the game. "When they first scored, you just have to forget about it and concentrate on the next shot, because if they score on the next shot, you're done," said goaltender Darryl Bouchard. Andrew Beck cut the margin in half with a third period goal, and Rob Con- very tied it with 3:40 left, sending the game into overtime. overtime. Despite the overtime winner winner bringing an end to the season, the Eagles were satisfied satisfied with the effort they put out, considering they were huge underdogs entering the series after finishing 30 points behind Cobourg in the East Conference standings. "As coaches, we couldn't ask more from our players. They gave everything they had for all four games," said Hodgins. "What more can you ask? With a few breaks we could have been up 3-1 or 4-0, but we're not." Two of the other East Conference playoff scries also ended in sweeps as Wellington eliminated Bancroft Bancroft and Trenton bounced Syracuse. Peterborough upset Kingston 4-1. THE SCOOP - Andrew Beck and Brian Taylor played their last game for the Eagles. Both players graduate graduate from junior hockey due to age...In seven years at the Jr. A level, the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs six times, but the results haven't been favourable. The Eagles have yet to win a scries, compiling a 6-24 record. /fi# SèûffîComtM 71 Station St., Ajax 905-427-8829 nrrni ^diadora - ad Id ad -4.' "V" ' #Wtb (- i W+K J 1 i--• y SATIRN.
