While the Canadian men's and women's Olympic teams received most of the acclaim for their gold medal-winning performances, another national team flexed its superiority as well. The Canadian men's amputee hockey hockey team completed the golden hat trick with a 14-0 lambasting of the United States in the final game of the Amputee Amputee International Championships held in Lake Placid, NY. Brent Clemens, captain of the Canadian men's hockey team (middle of front row), won a gold medal at the Amputee International Championships. Championships. which team is best. "A lot of the guys have played at my level or even higher," says Clemens, who won an Ontario championship championship with the Bowmanvillc Eagles Jr. C team during the 1980-81 season. The championship also included a European entry combining players from Russia and Finland. The next big step in the process is getting amputee hockey recognized as a full medal sport in the Paralympics, says Clemens. An opportunity will come later this month in Salt Lake City, Utah, when Canada and the U.S. play a showcase game for the International International Paralympic Committee during closing ceremonies of the Winter Paralympics Paralympics on Saturday, March 16. "That will be the biggest step for promoting amputee hockey worldwide," worldwide," says Wade of the significance of the game. Clemens hopes to have amputee hockey accepted as a full medal spoil for the Paralympics in Italy in 2006. "We were very strong," understated Brent Clemens, of Courlice, who serves as the Chairman of the Canadian Canadian Amputee Hockey Committee and captain of the men's team. In defence of the U.S., the team's No. 1 goalie was unable to play in the final game that contributed to the lopsided lopsided score, says Clemens.
